The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is sharpening it’s swords to embark on a massive general strike to protest what it called the Jonathan administration’s anti-Nigerian policy.

In a statement signed by NLC’s acting general secretary Mr. Owei Lakemfa, the Union said a perusal of the 2012 budget proposal submitted to the national assembly shows that the present administration has no intention of leading Nigeria out of the present socio-economic crisis.
It stated that the budget is a disaster waiting to happen; it particularly stated that the exclusion of fuel subsidy is not only tragic but a declaration of war on the Nigerian people.
It further stated that the attempt to impoverish workers and average Nigerians is coming on the heels of increased tariff on electricity, the move to massively sack workers in the name of merging parastatals, as well as the attempt to collect more taxes through the return of toll gates and the refusal to adequately fund education.
The union further stated that it is curious that the Jonathan government allocated a massive lion share of the budget to security when the increasing wave of insecurity in Nigeria is a lack of education and mass unemployment.
It said since the present administration has elected to punish Nigerian people through a poverty inducing budget, the Nigerian people would have no alternative but resist.
It stated that the NLC leadership would be meeting December 20th to firm up strategies and give directives on the commencement of the protest.
The NLC called on the National Assembly to side with the electorate by refusing to pass the budget and also asked the Jonathan administration to review the budget proposal.
