As soldiers man checkpoints in Kano, the round-the-clock curfew which was imposed after the violence following last Friday prayers has been relaxed to a night-time curfew, although streets remained largely deserted.

Dozens of people were still thronging morgues in Kano today and searching through stacks of dead bodies looking for their loved ones, while hospitals were struggling to cope with the dead and wounded.

Relief workers who were responsible for picking dead bodies from the streets have been quoted as saying that the overall death toll was at least 166.

The state government are yet to give a precise toll, but said the number of dead would be over 100.

The Blasts which also claimed the life of Channels TV Kano correspondent Enenche Akgwu.

The 31-year-old reporter was shot by unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, outside the Kano state government house while in the line of duty.
