Police shooting sparks unrest in Onitsha

Residents of the commercial city of Onitsha in Anambra state earlier today, took to the streets in violent protests against the extra-judicial killing of a bus driver.

The victim, alleged to be a member of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) is said have driven through a check-point mounted by policemen who pursued him and shot him in the neck after deflating his tyres.

The angry mob comprising commercial drivers and motorcyclists went on rampage attacking and looting shops between Nkpor junction and Ose market.

However, the MASSOB Director of information, Uchenna Madu says he has asked his members to desist from ethnic violence and instead called for the dismantling.

Meanwhile the Anambra state police commissioner, Muhtari Ibrahim confirmed that the killer cop has been arrested and will soon be prosecuted, and appealed for calm from the rampaging residents.
