Chief Oluwole OlumideThe late Chief Oluwole Olumide was laid to rest today at his home in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, surrounded by family, close friends and a host of dignitaries who were present to pay their last respects to the high Egba chief.

Olumide, an associate of former governor of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel, had allegedly committed suicide by drowning himself in a lake at the Golf resort in Abeokuta. His body had been discovered by fire service officials at about 9 a.m. on Saturday night.

Many who knew him were shocked by news of the circumstances surrounding his passing. Although no foul play was detected, police are still investigating the death of the late Egba chief.

Ogun State police commissioner noted that his body, once recovered from the lake, bore no signs of struggle. In a statement, the commissioner said Chief Olumide had visited the lakeside resort at about 7:30 on Friday night.

“He later sent his driver back on errand to his house at Ita-Eko, Surulere area of Abeokuta. When the driver came back, the Chief could not be located but his shoes and cap were found by the lake side,” the police statement read.

Officials say the investigation will continue; meanwhile, the late Chief’s family will release a formal statement on the passing of their loved one at a later date.

Friends and associates, who converged for the burial of Chief Olumide at his Ita-Eko, Surulere residence, say he will be remembered fondly and missed greatly.
