A dramatic scenario played out on Sunday between the governorship flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, senator Chris Ngige and his opponent, Mr Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

Both had attended a church service in Onitsha, where cheers from the congregation later turned out to be what could be described as a test of popularity for both candidates.

The Onitsha prison was the first place of call for Senator Ngige, whose arrival was greeted with loud cheers from inmates. On his part, Governor Obi had arrived earlier for the mass to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of the Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, the archbishop of Onitsha Catholic Archdiocese.

As the programme proceeded, Senator Ngige stepped out to receive the priest’s blessings, which attracted more cheers from the congregation.

On leaving the prison, Ngige visited Saint Peter’s Anglican Church, Nkpor Agu, where he was bestowed with the title, honour of light bearer.

However, the big test of popularity was witnessed at the Pastoral visit of the Archbishop of Onitsha to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Parish, Fegge.

The APGA governorship flag bearer, his wife, the wife of governor Obi and the national chairman of the party, were seated at one end of the auditorium while APC’s candidate, Ngige and his supporters were at another end.

At a point, the offertory song turned into political chants and Ngige was said to have received more cheers from residents and church members outside the auditorium.

Both Ngige and Obiano are contesting in the Anambra governorship election, which is to hold on November 16.
