The Commissioner of Information, Dr.Eze Chikamnayo has paid an inspection visit to both the old and new market, in order to ascertain that state government’s initiatives on the movement of traders from the old Umuahia main market to the new Ubani market is not compromised.

The Commissioner observed and pointed out the problem and environmental hazards in the old market (that has been solved with the new market) and the effort of government to ensure that it does not re-occur in the new market.

The old Umuahia main market which is not only located at the heart of the city, but has caused obstruction for the railway lines over the years, moreover materials used to construct the market are substandard as some of the buildings are almost collapsing.

On arrival at the market, the Commissioner of Information, Dr. Eze Chikamnayo hinted journalists that the devastating and environmental degradation is caused by the market which include selling on the railway lines and turning the pedestrian bridge into a dumpsite

Being assured that traders have moved, he went over to the new Ubani market where he observed that traders are being transported to the market by buses according to government directive but to his dismay noticed that buying and selling were being done on the ground outside the allocated shops.

Meanwhile, the commissioner also inspected the new low income houses located adjacent to the market which is seventy per cent completed being built by government to solve any possible accommodation problem.
