Edo state Police Command has refuted an allegation made against it and credited to the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole in which the Police was accused of being used for electoral malpractices in the just concluded re-run election in Esan North East.

The Police in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, Mr. Moses Eguavien, described the statement as false and an attempt to undermine the integrity of the Police and other security agencies which jointly monitored the election.

The statement said the Police are committed to its statutory obligation of providing security and maintenance of law and order in the state.

It will be recalled that the governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole allegedly pointed accusing fingers at the police for aiding ballot box snatching, supervising electoral fraud and intimidating voters in the just-concluded Esan North-East Local Government election held in the State, while speaking at the swearing-in of the Council Chairman, Mr. Sam Oboh at the Government House in Benin City.

Oshiomhole who couldn’t hide his embarrassment said the police have allegedly become electoral officials working in favour of the PDP to manipulate the elections and forcing electoral officers to sign result sheets under duress at a police station in Uromi, and that he will not submit to intimidation from any quarter as he appealed to the security agencies to respect the constitution.

And in reaction to the allegations, the PDP Chairman in Edo state, Dan Orbih also accused the APC government of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of fraudulently securing victory in the election by doctoring the election result with the aid of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission.

Chief Dan Orbih who brandished the result sheets at a press conference said they are ready to defend the result at any level required.
