A United Nations report says that there have been a total of 6,817 oil spills between 1976 and 2001, which accounts for a loss of 3 million barrels of oil, of which more than 70% was not recovered.

These spills have severe consequences on the environment and worse still the health of people.

Dateline Abuja on this edition speaks with the Director-general of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, Peter Idabor, on what is being done to address the rising cases of oil spill in Nigeria’s Niger-Delta region.
