The meeting of the Yoruba Committee on National Conference, held at the residence of Mr Olaniun Ajayi, in Ishara, Remo North Local Government of Ogun State, was attended by the governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, Mr Ayo Adebanjo and other leaders of thought from the six south west states.
The deliberations at the meeting were centred on issues of true federalism, new constitution, revenue allocation, parliamentary system of government among others.
Although the region, after the meeting which lasted for about four hours, is yet to come out with a position, there are indications that the delegates that would be selected to represent the region at the conference expected to begin in March would focus on the issues discussed by the committee.
Some of the committee members also want the decisions reached at the conference subjected to a referendum
The meeting was adjourned to February 17 when members of the delegate to the conference would be announced and the agenda for the conference ratified.
Some Nigerian lawyers have stressed the need to ensure that politicians would not be nominated as delegates to the conference. They have also called on the National Assembly to deliberate on the possibility of having a referendum, a process that requires an amendment of the constitution before it can hold.
The meeting of the Yoruba leaders shows the readiness of the region and its support for the conference expected to address the grey areas in the polity.
The conference, expected to begin in March, will he held for three months.
