The National Universities Commission (NUC) has rejected allegation by the House of Representatives that its accreditation of universities’ programmes was designed to favour universities willing to do its bidding.
In a reaction to a resolution of the house condemning alleged imbalance in accreditation of programmes in the universities, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Julius Okogie, said the process of accreditation of programmes is transparent and subject to appeal by dissatisfied universities.
Professor Okojie said members of the accreditation panel were professors drawn from universities in each of the six geo-political zones.
He said only one staff of the universities commission was a member of the accreditation panel.
“The process is very simple. What we do is go for verification. If you write for us that you want to start a new programme, we send a panel to the school to look at what they have on ground for that programme.
“We send professors from other institution who are knowledgeable in that area to go and carry out the check,” he said.
