Nyanya Park AbujaIt was a black Monday on April 14, in Nyanya Motor Park, as a bomb attack by members of the Boko Haram sect left over 70 dead and dozens injured.

Nigerian Federal Lawmakers visited the scene of the blast and condemned the attack.

They also rendered financial assistance to the victims.

But above such assistance and condemnation is a determination to end the spate of bombing in Nigeria, which they expressed. They reiterated their commitment to ensuring a more secured environment in the Federal Capital territory, Abuja to forestall the recurrence of the blast.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, Senator Smart Adeyemi, said that the senate would be actively involved in the allocation of funds and utilisation of same.

He outlined how they intend to achieve an improved security in Nigeria.

“We want to look at the amount allocated to security again. We will be specific this time. The Executive Arm of Government would be made to provide security cameras that would go beyond what people can tamper with. It would be put especially where you have large number of people moving around in Abuja.

“We will provide fund for 24 hour coverage and provide support for security organisations,” Senator Adeyemi stated.

He said that the cameras would help ensure that surveillance was intensified, with adequate funds allocated to the project and proper monitoring of the funds to ensure proper utilisation.

“We will get much more involved in the procurement of the camera,” he said.

Some roads in Abuja currently have surveillance cameras mounted but security experts said that the cameras were not working.

It is important that the cameras are functional, as it would help deter criminals.

Mr Adeyemi stressed that the Federal Lawmakers would get involved to ensure that the right cameras were acquired and mounted.

“People who will fix these cameras must be well qualified,” he said.

The lawmaker also emphasised the need to ensure that security personnel were effectively equipped.
