Abuja
AbujaPedestrians who refuse to use bridges provided for them in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory may soon face sanctions, including fines, as the F.C.T Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it would recommend stiff penalties for unsafe road crossing in Abuja.

The commission expressed concern over the attitudes of some pedestrians who ignore the bridges provided for safe crossing of highways around the city.

According to the F.C.T Head of Operations, Mr Wobin Gora, such attitude has increased the number of fatalities resulting from hit and run drivers in recent times.

He said that the FRSC would do every thing possible to encourage the use of the bridges.

In line with this, the Police have started arresting pedestrians who force their way through the wire fencing that are installed to encourage the use of the bridges.

Abuja, Nigeria’s capital has over 15 pedestrian bridges. Before they were constructed, statistics from the Federal Road Safety Corps revealed that about 100 people were killed every quarter by reckless drivers on the city’s highways.

Should the recommendation for a stiffer penalty be approved, pedestrians who refuse to use the bridges could have harder times just ahead of them.
