Mike_OmeriThe Nigerian government has said that it is handling the insecurity situation in the north-east effectively despite the concerns raised by international community on the activities of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, told reporters in Abuja on Friday that the government was sustaining its efforts toward peace and stability in the region.

He also spoke about the abducted Chibok schoolgirls and efforts that were being made to track down the alleged sponsors of the Boko Haram sect.

“The government is sustaining the effort and ensuring that peace and stability are established in the north east.

“The issue of the abducted girls is still on the front burner of the President’s major concerns and he is working assiduously to ensure that we put this behind us using and deploying the best methods and approaches as is with these kinds of situations where they exist anywhere in the world,” he said.

Over 200 girls were abducted from their school dormitory in Chibok, Borno State on April 14 by members of the Boko Haram sect.

The group had said they would release the girls in exchange for members held at different detention camps within Nigeria.

A self-appointed negotiator, Dr Stephen Davis, had accused some high ranking Nigerians officials of being sponsors of the Boko Haram sect.

But Mr Omeri stressed the need for caution to be applied in considering Dr Davis’ claims.

“We are not clear of the status of Mr Davis yet, but as a result of those comments, individuals mentioned are beginning to indicate their willingness to be investigated.

“Whatever must be done rightly would be done to ensure that the truth comes out,” he said.

Mr Omeri stressed that the government was committed to rescuing the girls, stressing that any information or activity that would lead to their rescue would be appreciated.
