Graduates of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike
, Abia State, which include the sets from 2010 to 2013, have performed the first oath taking ceremony administered by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
It was the maiden occasion since the inception of the institution and the kick off of the Veterinary College of Medicine in 2006. With the induction, the graduates have become veterinary doctors and posses the license to practice their profession.
The Pius Anyim Hall of the Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture was filled up with the parents, academicians and well wishers of the graduates, who came to witness the auspicious occasion of oath-taking which came after some years without practice.
According to their year of graduation, starting with the first batch, they stood up and pledged allegiance to practice their profession. The oath-taking was administered on the graduates by the Registrar of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
The Abia State Government, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Nkpa Agu Nkpa, and the President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Professor Garuba Sharubutu, admonished the veterinary doctors to practice by the ethics of their profession to ensure a better public health for both the livestock and the people.
It was cheers of excitement as the doctors begin their practice ahead of the challenges, especially the recent outbreak of the Ebola virus, that affects both man and animals.
This achievement, according to the Vice Chancellor of the Micheal Okpara University, Professor Hilary Edeoga, as well as the Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Arunsi Kalu, did not come easy, as there were still challenges to be tackled within the institution, which include manpower development among others.
