IGPThe Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has called on Nigerians to support and appreciate the Police Force in order to achieve growth and development in the sector.

He said over the years there has been poor public perception about the force, also members of the public see the police as people who do not respect their rights or violate their rights.

Mr. Arase stated that the reforms going on in the force is to help Nigerians have a better relationship with the police and make them (police) accountable for whatever they do.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily,in Abuja, Mr. Arase said he wants to use his tenure to get rid of things that give the Nigerian Police Force a bad image such as road blocks, unlawful detention, incivility to members of the public.

He explained that once these issues are out of the way, there would be a sensitization to educate officers that the rights of Nigerians should not be abused by keep them in police custody for so long.

Mr. Arase advocated for “Intelligence Policing”, explaining that officers should be well trained in order to assemble evidence before inviting someone for questioning, adding that once the person is invited, the officer must be able to provide evidence and within 48 hours the person should know his/her fate.
