At least 21 persons have been killed in an accident involving a tanker, a motorcycle and other vehicles at the Abudu axis of the Benin Asaba expressway.
According to an eyewitness, a tanker laden with kerosene ran into a motorcycle carrying a gallon of petrol and exploded, leaving about five vehicles held up in traffic on the road burnt.
He told Channels Television that a bad spot in the area had forced most of the vehicles to slow down and navigate the bad spot.
“We were at the bad spot, trying to ease movement of vehicles when we heard a sound. We looked back and saw fire coming from a tanker and we all ran from the scene,” he said, giving an account of the incident.
Confirming the incident, an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Edo Command, Samuel Odukoya, said that a number of factors could have resulted in the tragic incident, hinting that the casualty figure is well over 21.
“The number that could be gathered that could be recognised, because some of them were burnt totally, are 21.
“I learnt that one person was taken to the hospital yesterday,” he told Channels Television.
