Indigenes of Oyo Town, a historic ancient town in Yoruba land have jointly demanded the slot to contest for the Governorship seat in Oyo State calling for a paradigm shift in process of choosing Oyo State governor.

At a town hall meeting held at the Ancient Atiba Hall, an Indigent group known as  The Metropolitan Development Association, which comprises leaders of thoughts, opinion leaders, community leaders, village heads, artisans, proletariat, religious leaders, market men and women from Oyo town called on the Oyo  state Governor,  Abiola Ajimobi and all political parties in the state to consider zoning the governorship slot in the state to Oyo zone come 2019.

The association also recalled that other zones like Ibadan city, Ibadan less city, Oke-Ogun one and two as well as Ogbomoso, had benefitted by either producing governor or deputy governor in the past while Oyo town has never produced.

They demand a paradigm shift in the political stand of the town and to do this, they want a shot at the Government House for the 1st time I over 40yrs that Oyo had been created from the Western region.

A lawmaker, Honourable Segun Taiwo said, “What is good for Ibadan and Oke Ogun is also good for Oyo. It is high time. If you look at the issue of old Oyo Empire. We have enough intellectual candidates that can occupy the number one seat in Oyo State, they should give us the chance.”

In a communique issued by the association at the end of the meeting and signed by the chairman and acting secretary general, Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu and Ade Atanda, respectively, the group called on the political parties to consider Oyo indigenes as a candidate for 2019 elections.

The group noted that it is ironic and totally unfair that the town from which the state got its name has never had a shot at the seat of government in over 40yrs.

The group further noted that in spite of the inestimable contributions of many illustrious sons and daughters of Oyo extraction to the socio-economic advancement of Oyo state since its creation on February 3, 1976, no Oyo indigene has ever occupied nor considered for the number one seat.

The association, therefore, called on Senator Abiola Ajimobi to emulate Kwara and Ogun state method and political understanding whereby governorship seat is rotated on the senatorial basis.  Till date, other zones of the state had produced 21 Governors but none ever came from Oyo town.
