Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) needs a presidential candidate who will turn the country’s fortunes around irrespective of where such person comes from.

The governor made the comment on Monday when he spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily amid calls for the presidential seat to be zoned to the south region of Nigeria.

“What Nigerians require, first is a competent, committed, smart thinking and smart acting candidate who will turn the fortunes of this country around irrespective of where he comes from,” the governor said during the breakfast show.

“We have seen turn by turn presidency in this country in the past and we have seen the results. What Nigerians require is a man who will give that hope.”

‘Very Successful Convention’

Some APC members are seen on the stage as the party holds its national convention in Abuja on March 26, 2022. Channels TV/ Sodiq Adelakun.

According to him, the country needs a president who will unite every part of Nigeria and also build on the legacies of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“What the party requires now is a smart, vibrant and younger generation to take over the mantle of leadership,” he explained.

His comment comes barely two days after the APC held its national convention and elected leaders for the party. The governor, who also spoke about the event, expressed happiness that it was successful.

According to him, the national convention addressed issues in the APC, stressing that, more than ever, the party is united under the guidance of President Buhari.

“If the agitations were not laid to rest or the concerns were not laid to rest, or even addressed, you would have seen a rancorous convention,” he maintained.

“There are several concerns, agitations, and expectations and that should be expected from a large party like ours; of course today we have over 41 million members with their PVC as members of our great party and this is a party to beat.

“So, such concerns will always be expected but you can see the ways and manner in which we conducted ourselves at the convention, very joyously; elaborately we conducted the convention and everybody, those who needed to step down in the interest of the party in respect for our leader – President Muhammadu Buhari – stepped down and by the special grace of God, we had a very successful convention.”
