Youths from indigenous communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) staged a protest at the National Assembly premises on Wednesday over what they described as continued marginalisation of the FCT natives.

Operating under the banner of the FCT Youth Stakeholders Forum, the demonstrators are opposing the nomination of Solomon Adodo to the Board of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

According to one of the leaders of the group, Zakari Gambo Babale, Adodo is from Benue State, which already has multiple representatives on the commission. He believes that his nomination to the board of the NDDC sidelines FCT’s indigenous people.

The protest turned a bit rowdy, prompting security officials to shut the main gate of the national assembly complex.

Staff and visitors were redirected to use the entrance near the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The leadership of the National Assembly have yet to make a statement concerning the protest.
