Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has announced the death of her sister, Ruth Otabor.

The news was made public in a statement posted Sunday on Phyna’s Instagram page, which was issued and signed by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family.

The statement noted that Ruth passed away on Sunday, 31 August 2025, at about 6:30 a.m., weeks after being involved in a road accident with a truck near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State.

“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st day of August, 2025, at about 06:30hrs,” the statement read.

The family added that they were presently grieving and requested privacy to mourn their loss, noting that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Ruth, a graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, had been battling for her life after the August 13 accident involving a truck reportedly linked to the Dangote Group.

She underwent a leg amputation following the crash, and photos shared online before her death showed her in hospital with her leg bandaged.

The development sparked a wave of sympathy online, with hashtags such as #JusticeForRuth gaining traction on social media platforms.

Before her death, Phyna had publicly called out the Dangote Group, accusing it of attempting to shield those responsible for the accident.

She had also expressed anguish over the slow response to her sister’s plight.

Shortly after her outcry, the Dangote Group released a statement on August 14, 2025, addressing the road accident involving Ms Otabor, while the company’s officials and insurance team visited the scene and the victim at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Auchi.

The company expressed its commitment to supporting Mrs Otabor, including providing medical care and compensation in line with its welfare policy.

Meanwhile, the Dangote Group has condoled with the family over the death of the lady.

In a statement on Sunday, the company stated that since the accident, its “officials and insurance partners have been by her side, covering all financial and medical costs and supporting her family”.

The statement partly read, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Otabor, who was injured in the recent road incident involving one of our trucks in Auchi, Edo State.

On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

“Arrangements had been made for her to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors. Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today.

“At Dangote Group, safety, accountability, and compassion remain at the core of our operations. We remain committed to strengthening our safety systems and supporting those affected in moments of tragedy. May God grant her mercy and eternal rest.”
