NBA Urges Members To Avoid Nine LGAs In Kebbi After Lawyer’s Abduction

The Nigerian Bar Association also directed its members to boycott court proceedings from October 7 to October 10 in protest against the kidnapping of their colleague and to draw attention to the worsening security situation.

Kebbi State is in North-West, Nigeria.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kebbi Branch, has directed its members to refrain from travelling to nine local government areas it identified as kidnapping hotspots in the state.

The Chairman of the Branch, Aminu Hassan, who gave the directive in a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi, said the affected areas include Bagudo, Suru, Kamba in Dandi, Bunza, Kangiwa in Arewa, Dirin Daji in Sakaba, Ribah, Kanya, and Augie local government areas of the state.

He explained that the decision followed an emergency meeting of the association held last Saturday to deliberate on the abduction of one of its members, Mr Isyaku Muhammad-Danjuma, on October 1, along the Ibeto-Birnin Kebbi route in the Magama Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to him, the association condemned the abduction and expressed deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity across the country.

He said the branch resolved that all members should boycott court proceedings from October 7 to October 10 in protest against the kidnapping of their colleague and to draw attention to the worsening security situation.

“Upon the expiration of the boycott period, members are also urged to suspend handling of terrorism-related cases, including those involving kidnapping, abduction, armed robbery or unlawful possession of firearms, until further notice,” he said on Sunday.

The chairman said the association would engage relevant authorities to ensure the safe release of the abducted lawyer.

He called on government and security agencies to take urgent steps to restore peace and public confidence.

He added that the branch would work with the judiciary to provide alternative venues for court cases to minimise travel to unsafe locations.

Hassan, however, commended members of the Bar, the judiciary, the media, and other Nigerians for their solidarity and urged them to remain united in the pursuit of justice and peace.

Police Debunk Claim

Meanwhile, the Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed the claim by the NBA that nine local government areas in the state are ungovernable.
The police described the allegation as “false, misleading, and grossly irresponsible”.
“At no time or circumstance has any part of Kebbi State become ungovernable or inaccessible to law enforcement or judicial authorities,” a statement by the Police Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, partly read.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Command wishes to clarify that the abduction of Isiaku Danjuma, a legal practitioner based in Kebbi but an indigene of Ibeto, Niger State, occurred in Ibeto, Niger State — outside the jurisdiction of Kebbi State.
“The victim had travelled from Niger to Abuja and merely joined the bus provided by the Kebbi State Government for those attending the investiture ceremony of Hudu Lawan, SAN. On the return journey, he alighted at Kontagora and proceeded to Ibeto, where he was unfortunately abducted,” it added.
The police stated that they remain deeply concerned about the regrettable incident, it is misguided and counterproductive for any professional association to “issue blanket and far-reaching statements without first engaging or verifying facts from the Police or relevant security agencies”.
“Such statements can only serve to create unnecessary fear, embolden criminal elements, and undermine ongoing security operations.
“The Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M. Sani, has assured residents of the State that Kebbi remains safe and secure, and that law-abiding citizens should go about their lawful duties without fear,” the statement added.
