Nigeria Security Emergency

Under Fire At Home And Abroad, Tinubu Declares National Security Emergency
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency in Nigeria after weeks of attacks and abductions by gunmen and suspected terrorists that have dogged his administration.
Tinubu, whose government has come under international pressure, especially after US President Donald Trump’s military threat over the killings by gunmen and kidnapping of over 300 schoolchildren, also ordered additional recruitment of 50,000 personnel into the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force.
Trump’s criticism prompted the Nigerian government to constitute the Nigerian side of the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group as part of steps to deepen collaboration in tackling security challenges in the country.
Abduction Wave
Children, Pregnant Women Among Dozens Abducted In Nigeria’s Latest Attacks By Terrorists
While parents of the over 200 pupils whisked away by bandits from a Catholic school in Niger State were still reeling from the abduction of their children, gunmen struck in the Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State, kidnapping at least eight villagers, and in Shiroro, Niger State, where 24 people, including pregnant women, were abducted from a rice farm.
This adds to a series of attacks witnessed in Kwara State (in North-Central), and Borno and Kano states in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West regions, respectively, leaving many communities across the country in fear and uncertainty.
Tinubu Names Ambassadors

Reno Omokri, Ex-INEC Chair, 33 Others Make List
In what seemed like a direct response to Nigeria’s weakening international standing, President Bola Tinubu nominated 32 people, including a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, as ambassadors.
The nomination came more than two years after the former Lagos State governor was sworn in a Nigeria’s president on May 29, 2023.
The new nominees are expected to be posted to countries, such as China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa, and Kenya, and to Permanent Missions such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the African Union, with which Nigeria maintains strategic bilateral relations.

Worried by the rising level of insecurity in the country, the governors of Nigeria’s South-West states renewed their call for the creation of state police, a measure Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State said is non-negotiable, to tackle the security challenges bedeviling the region.
The political leaders, under the aegis of the South-West Governors’ Forum, also agreed to create a South West Regional Security Fund that would be managed by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission and supervised by the special advisers on security from all six states: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti.
VIP ‘Guards’ Recalled

IGP Withdraws 11,566 Police Officers From VIPs
Three days after President Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police officers guarding prominent personalities, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday, November 27, 2025, said that 11,566 police personnel have been recalled.
Underscoring the inadequate manpower in the police force, Egbetokun believes the President’s directive is strategic, adding that the redeployment of the affected personnel to underserved communities has since commenced.
Amid the concerns over the use of policemen for VIP protection, a serving federal lawmaker representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, advocated the withdrawal of such police officers who serve as guards for the wives and children of some National Assembly members.

Thanks to the Ivorian government, the former Bayelsa governor was airlifted safely to Nigeria to the relief of many Nigerians and the House of Representatives, who had earlier urged the Presidency to aid the safe return of the elderstatesman.
‘It’s Academic’

Appeal Court Slams Door On Nnamdi Kanu Rights Violation Case Against DSS, AGF
The legal battle of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, suffered a setback when the Court of Appeal in Abuja struck out his appeal. The court dismissed the appeal of the IPOB on the grounds that it lacked merit and had become academic, following his conviction for terrorism offences by a Federal High Court in a judgment on November 20, 2025.
The judgment was on his appeal against the July 3 judgment by Justice Taiwo Taiwo (now retired) of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which earlier dismissed his fundamental rights enforcement suit on the grounds that he failed to prove his case.
