The teachers, selected from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, were each awarded ₦25 million at the 2026 Nigeria Teachers Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In addition, the overall best-performing teacher received a grand prize of ₦50 million, marking one of the most significant financial recognitions for educators in Nigeria’s history.

Speaking at the summit, the Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, said the future of any nation is directly tied to the quality of its teachers, describing educators as the bedrock of sustainable national development.

“Today, we gather around a simple but powerful truth: teachers are the foundation of education and education is the foundation of national development,” the minister said.

“No nation can rise above the quality of its teachers,” he added.

The awards ceremony formed part of a broader national conversation on education reform, teacher empowerment, and system-wide transformation, drawing stakeholders from government, labour unions, and civil society.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, commended the organisers for placing teachers at the centre of national policy dialogue, describing the summit as a vital platform for redefining Nigeria’s educational future.

He praised the sustenance of an initiative that enables collective reflection, shared learning, and strategic consensus on addressing systemic challenges facing the education sector.

The summit focused on empowering teachers through improved welfare, professional development, and recognition, as the Federal Government reiterated its commitment to strengthening the teaching profession nationwide.

“Education remains a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda. This administration understands that national transformation begins with our teachers,” the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, said.

Education reform is a key component of the Tinubu administration’s development strategy, particularly as Nigeria seeks to improve learning outcomes, address teacher shortages, and restore confidence in public education—issues closely followed by Nigerians in the diaspora with children, investments, and philanthropic interests in the sector.

President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Audu Amba, said the emergence of a national agenda for educational sustainability reflects a deeper government commitment to recognising teachers as central pillars of the education system.

According to him, sustained investment in teachers’ welfare and professional growth is critical to reversing years of decline in educational standards.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, who was recognised at the event for her contributions to education, paid tribute to teachers nationwide, describing them as the quiet architects of nation-building whose impact often goes unnoticed.

The summit was designed to strengthen the teaching profession, advance sustainable education reforms, and foster dialogue that will shape national education policy and inform future reform initiatives.

It attracted teachers from across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reflecting broad national participation.

The theme of the summit, “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National Agenda for Education, Transformation and Sustainability,” was described by participants as timely and critical to addressing persistent challenges within Nigeria’s education system.
