The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, says Nigerians should vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election, citing economic hardship, unemployment, and heavy taxation, among others.
Tanko said this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics, saying next year’s election will be between Nigerians and the APC.
“A lot of Nigerians, as we speak, cannot afford to eat one or two square meals, are afraid to go to their farms, cannot afford to pay the school fees of their children, and their businesses have crumbled because of the heavy taxation in the system,” he said.
“And yet we are borrowing so much money not for production but for consumption. How does a country go about that?”
The Obidient Movement leader claimed that the current situation shows that the country is drained.

Tanko spoke in the wake of the recent defection of Peter Obi (the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, whom the movement is named after) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party) from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Obi’s movement to the NDC, months after he joined the ADC from the Labour Party, has led to criticism from several quarters, including the presidency, the APC, and observers alike.
But Tanko has defended the former Anambra governor’s defection, insisting that he left the ADC due to internal wranglings and the need for a better platform to serve Nigerians.
There are claims that Obi is not on good terms with ex-vice president Atiku Abubakar.
However, he dismissed the insinuation, describing Atiku, who joined the ADC with Obi, as someone held to “the highest level of respect”.
“He is our father, our leader, and then we know that at this point we expect those who want to rescue Nigeria from the circle of poverty and decay in the system will join hands with us so that we can fight and fight for the emancipation of Nigeria,” he said about Atiku, who ran on a joint ticket with Obi for the presidency in 2019.
