I Brag To My Colleagues About Being A Graduate — Davido

The five-time Grammy-nominated singer initially studied business administration in the United States before leaving to focus on music.

Nigerian Afrobeats star David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, has spoken about the pride he takes in earning a university degree, revealing that he often boasts to his colleagues about completing his education despite the demands of a successful music career.

The award-winning singer made the remarks during a homecoming visit to Babcock University, his alma mater, where he addressed journalists and students.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Davido said obtaining a degree remains one of his proudest accomplishments, particularly in an industry where many aspiring artistes abandon their studies in pursuit of fame.

Speaking further in Pidgin English, the singer added, “Babcock University really shaped my career. The most important thing, which I appreciate now, is the fact that I got my education. I dey use am brag now with my colleagues say, you know, I went to school and finished. Not everybody who started school finished.”

Davido explained that his time at the university played a significant role in shaping his discipline, confidence and outlook on life beyond music.

He acknowledged that balancing his studies with a rapidly growing music career was challenging, but said the experience proved worthwhile.

The singer also noted that the university holds special memories for him, as it was where he met his wife, Chioma Adeleke. He added that several of his hit songs were recorded and released while he was still a student.

Davido initially studied Business Administration at Oakwood University in the United States before leaving to focus on music.

At the insistence of his father, Adedeji Adeleke, he returned to Nigeria and enrolled at Babcock University, where he graduated in 2015 with a degree in Music.

Davido has frequently emphasised the importance of education, hard work and personal development, using his own journey as an example that academic success and a thriving entertainment career can go hand in hand.

One of Africa’s most successful music exports, Davido rose to prominence with hit songs such as Dami Duro, If and Fall.

He is also the founder of Davido Music Worldwide and has received numerous international accolades, including five Grammy Award nominations.
