The Nigerian government has assured nursing mothers of an enabling environment that will allow for exclusively breastfeeding of their children.
The assurance comes, as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW).
At the ministerial flag off of the 2014 world event, the minister of health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, advocated for improved commitment from all persons for the protection, promotion and support of optimal breastfeeding practices.
Also at the occasion, the director, Food Safety and Applied Nutrition of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Mainasara Ogochukwu, reiterated the ban on the advertisement of baby supplements in other to encourage breastfeeding mothers.
The theme for this year’s event is; BREASTFEEDING: A Winning Goal – For Life! It asserts the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding – in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) countdown, and beyond.
All celebrants of WBW have been urged to Protect, Promote and Support Breastfeeding: It is a vital Life-Saving Goal.
World Breastfeeding Week is an annual celebration which is being held every year from 1 to 7 August in more than 120 countries.
