2019: Atiku Visits Makarfi, Seeks Support

Former Vice President Of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday visited the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Makarfi, at his residence in Kaduna.

Atiku, who is a presidential aspirant under the PDP in the 2019 elections, said the visit was aimed at seeking the support of Makarfi, who is also a presidential aspirant, as the party struggles to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He described the APC government as a total failure and therefore, said the party must not be allowed to continue in office in 2019.

Atiku said he was willing to support any other candidate of the party that emerged through a credible process, should he lose in the presidential primary.

On his part, Senator Makarfi said both himself and Atiku were eminently qualified for the country’s number one seat, adding that his presidential ambition was not a do or die affair.

Also in attendance at the meeting was the Director General of the Atiku Campaign Organization and former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, as well as close associates of Senator Makarfi.

2019: Makarfi Asks PDP To Choose Credible Candidate

The former caretaker committee chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has called on the party to present a credible candidate ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Makarfi who is also a presidential aspirant, made the call on Friday when he met with delegates of the party in Enugu.

He said he believes that the only guarantee for victory is a candidate that understands the tenets of governance.

Beyond that, he also warned against choosing an unpopular candidate, merely based on social media ratings.

Furthermore, he emphasized the need for the restructuring of the country with emphasis on institutional reforms.

Reconcile Aggrieved Party Members, Makarfi Tells New PDP Chairman

The former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi has urged the newly elected chairman of the PDP, Mr Uche Secondus to pursue reconciliation to the latter.

Senator Makarfi made the appeal at the PDP headquarters in Abuja, where the formal handing over ceremony was performed.

In his remarks, the PDP national chairman, gave the assurances that reconciliation will be the first assignment of his theme.

According to him, the process of reconciliation has already started, saying that the gate of the party will also be thrown open for those who left the party for one reason or the other to come in.

Mr Secondus was declared the winner of the election, around 3:30 am on Sunday, after which he was sworn in.

He defeated a former Minister of Education, Professor Tunde Adeniran and Founder of Daar Communications, Raymond Dokpesi, in a controversial election.

The results, announced by the immediate past Governor of Benue State and Chairman of the electoral committee, Mr Gabriel Suswam, showed that Secondus polled 2,000 votes, compared to the 231 votes secured by Professor Adeniran and the 66 votes that went to Dokpesi in the election.

In his acceptance speech, Secondus verbally served the APC a ‘quit notice’, vowing to lead his party back to power in 2019.

“Let me assure you great members and leaders of our party, that by the grace of God and with all hands on deck, the brief tenancy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Aso Rock Villa expires on May 28, 2019. By this, we serve them a quit notice,” he said.

In launching his attack on the APC, the new PDP chairman turned to a quote by Dwight Eisenhower.

He said, “In the words of the 34th President of the United States of America Dwight Eisenhower, ‘If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power’.

“Judging from this, it is crystal clear to all Nigerians, that APC is not a political party, but a body hurriedly assembled to seize power without a clear-cut plan for governance.”

After taking his shot at the APC’s foundation, the PDP National Chairman argued that his party was founded on ideals that are “totally in tandem” with those of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

The Chairman National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration saying that the PDP would vibrantly play its role as an opposition.

Although he expressed his firm belief that “opposition is no madness”, he, however, noted that the PDP would give the ruling party (APC) a run for its money and constantly keep the President on his toes.

He made this known during the committee’s visit to the President at Aso Rock on Friday.

Meanwhile, Makarfi also expressed gratitude to God for President Buhari’s recovery following an illness that kept him away from the country for over three months.

“It is on record Mr President that while you were away, being the major opposition party in the country did not stop us from praying for your quick recovery and return to Nigeria. This is because we honestly believe that the President of our country, whatever party flag he or she flies, is our president; and his or her health, is substantially linked with the nation’s health in so many ways. So a prayer for your health Mr President, we believe is a prayer for the good health of our country. That was why at several fora, we did, and enjoined others, irrespective of party affiliation, to pray for your quick recovery. It is a thing of joy, that Allah has answered our prayers.

“In any case this PDP firmly believes that opposition is no madness; it will therefore never wish ill of anybody, let alone the person saddled with the responsibility of leading our country. Mr President, you will agree with me that the PDP has more than a fair knowledge and experience of the weight of that responsibility.

“Mr President, having welcomed you back and prayed for you, let me seize this opportunity to assure you, and through you, the entire country, that the PDP having assumed the leadership of the opposition in this country, is poised to play that role energetically, vibrantly, but very decently and with all sense of responsibility. This we shall do by giving you a good run for your money and constantly keeping you on your toes as we all strive to make this country better.”

Markafi also stressed that the PDP would cooperate with the government on any programme sincerely designed to take Nigeria to higher levels.

Speaking on the government’s anti-graft war, he promised that the PDP would give all the necessary support and encouragement to institutions involved in the fight.

“We also offer our support for the fight against corruption and appeal that the institutions saddled with this onerous task be given a necessary encouragement and independence to do the right thing. This will help in further strengthening our institutions and insulating them from undue political interferences. It will also help give them a more credible outlook in the eyes of the public.

“There is no way we can have a respectable voice in the comity of civilized nations until we rebuild our institutions and imbue them with the necessary independence and confidence that will improve both their visage and standing with the citizenry The government should lead the charge in this regard by, especially, exhibiting greater respect to judicial pronouncements as well as respecting the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.

“The PDP as a great believer in the unity of this country will also partner with the government in any way(s) that will strengthen our historic bond and rebuild bridges of our beautiful relationships that seem to be cracking at the moment.
“Mr President, we once again express our sincere happiness at your recovery and return home. We wish you more good health, strength and God’s guidance,” he said.

God Shut The Lion’s Mouth And Saved PDP – Fayose

Governor of Ekiti State and chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has said their unwavering stand on truth was responsible for why the factional Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff lost at the Supreme Court.

Fayose said the supporters of Ahmed Makarfi didn’t win the legal battle on the premise of wealth, connection or political scheming, but said what gave them victory over Sheriff’s faction at the Supreme court was their avowed stand for truth .

He made this known on Sunday during a special thanksgiving service at the Saint Paul Anglican Church, Ikole-Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of the state, held by the party leaders and members to celebrate the victory.

Party leaders and members who graced the event included: Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Kolapo Olusola, Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kolawole Oluwawole, State Chairman of the party, Gboyega Oguntuase, from Ikole, Chairman of Ikole-Local Government Council, Adeyanju Adeyeye, Kehinde Agboola, member of House of Representatives, representing Ikole Constituency, and member of Ekiti State House of Assembly representing Ikole, Mrs Titilayo Owolabi Akerele, among other dignitaries,

Fayose, who was represented at the event by his deputy, said: “Our story in PDP Ekiti and Nigeria is not different from what happened to Daniel in the Bible. The governor believes so much in prayers.

“When we stand on the truth, God will be with us. What happened to PDP in Nigeria is that truth has prevailed. God has shut the lion’s mouth and prevented it from devouring us. Fayose stands by the truth always and that is why he always triumph,” he said.

While the Chairman of Ikole Local Government, Adeyanju Adeyeye said the victory of the party was a signal to the world that the PDP would win the Ekiti gubernatorial poll in 2018, state Chairman of the Party, Gboyega Oguntuase assured members that no one would be punished for anti-party activities.

“We have come today to give back to God the glory that belongs to Him. We know that this victory has not been our doing but because God, in his infinite mercies, wanted us to have the victory.

“It is very rare to win a case already lost at the High and Appeal court. But God saw us through. God showed His supremacy and all the justices of the Supreme Court decided in favour of Makarfi. With that decision of the Supreme Court, the soul of the PDP has been saved. So, we are celebrating a God that has given us victory.

“I want to tell you that the disposition of the PDP is to make sure that we try nobody for any offence. We want a bigger PDP. There is nobody that is beyond redemption, so as far as I am concerned, we would not try anybody.

“There have been contentions in our party and the case was a legal one and it has been settled by the highest court in the land. We who have been given that power to lead the party would not try anybody for any offence. We will now work together as a family.

“Now, PDP is alive, active and growing. It s now very likely that PDP will reclaim power in 2019. To those who have spoken by the wisdom of man that he has seen the end of PDP, now he has lived to see the glory of PDP,” he added.

On July 12, the Supreme Court declared the Ahmed Makarfi Caretaker Committee of the PDP as validly constituted, officially bringing an end to the leadership crisis that had rocked the Party for over a year.

Both men had been at loggerheads since May 21, 2016, when Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was purportedly removed at the party’s convention held in Port Harcourt.

Agents Of Darkness

Makarfi’s supporters had described the Sheriff’s faction of the party as “agents of darkness“, insisting that the former Governor of Borno State, is not the Chairman of the party.

The PDP noted that the ‘group’, which it described as non-PDP members, had in a statement tried to sustain it’s illegal claim to the leadership of the Party, but insisted that it would not leave them to continue to deceive Nigerians.

While the Makarfi faction enjoyed the support of most of the organs of the PDP, the Sheriff faction was declared the authentic leadership by the Court of Appeal in February.

As the crisis continued to take new turns, many Makarfi supporters such as the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Ayodele Fayose, continued to stress that Ali Modu Sheriff could not lead the Party and hence moved to appeal the judgement.

The Ekiti State Governor went further to state that he could end up leaving the Party if the outcome of the Supreme Court verdict on the leadership tussle did not favour the Makarfi-led caretaker committee.

With the final verdict, some Party Chieftains lauded the judgement, saying that Nigeria now has a viable opposition and have continued to preach peace and unity within the party in order to emerge as a formidable force.

I Would’ve Burnt My PDP Card, Flag If Sheriff Won – Fayose

Fayose Underscores Benefits Of Quality Education
File Photo: Ayodele Fayose

The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose says he would have burnt his membership card and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag if Senator Ali Modu Sheriff had won at the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Fayose, who had been the most vociferous critic of Sheriff’s leadership in the party, said he went to court with a perfume with the intention to destroy his card and the party’s flag if the delegitimised Chairman had won, saying “I never imagined myself being in the same party with impostors”.

The Supreme Court had in a judgement on who was the authentic Chairman of the party, declared the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction the genuine leadership, laying to rest the crisis of several months that had done colossal damage to the party.

Fayose, who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Friday during his triumphant entry into Ekiti from Abuja, pointed out that Sheriff and members of his faction had been forgiven but won’t go scot-free for causing the party members so much pangs and pains.

The governor said with the victory, President Muhammadu Buhari and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo would be defeated in the 2019 presidential poll, saying efforts will be stepped up to revive the party and fortify it the more to be able to play its opposition roles.

“I went to court with a perfume which I wanted to use to spray my cards and party flags and set them ablaze even within the court premises if Sheriff had won, that was why I went to court.

“Though, I believe that we remain the same PDP family but no one can cause our party such pains and embarrassment and expect that he would go without being asked to account for his actions.

“Even the reactions of Sheriff people shows that we remain together. But the no victor, no vanquished that we said was a mere political slogan. Whoever that participated in this charade must show some reasonable level of remorse for their actions”, he said.

He said the party would henceforth begin serious mobilization drives up to the grassroots level with efforts to re-energize the party to be able to defeat President Buhari and his Deputy in one swell swoop.

“Our party had ever remained one indissoluble family, which is PDP.
It was only these impostors that were causing troubles but such had been laid to rest . PDP is a formidable force and we shall work up to the grassroots level to convince our people that we are up to the task of rebuilding this nation and win election in 2019.”

When asked about his presidential ambition, Fayose retorted that: “It is still much alive. I am an early starter and that has been my style of politics. In 2003, I started earlier and I defeated Otunba Niyi Adebayo and likewise Dr Kayode Fayemi in 2014.

“I want to tell you that the APC won’t return to the Villa. We shall defeat both Buhari and Osinbajo, we are removing the two together and I want you to believe this.

“When I talk, people would say I always pose like a Nostradamus, a man who can see tomorrow. Whether they like it or not, I shall be in the Villa in 2019, so my ambition is very much alive,” Fayose stated.
