Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has expressed shock over the killing of APC stalwart, Ahmed Gulak, describing the incident as an unfortunate clear case of political assassination. 

Addressing Imo people in a broadcast at the Government House in Owerri the Imo State capital, the governor said he is really saddened by the gruesome murder which underscores the ugly security situation in Imo State in recent times.

Uzodinma in his oration on Monday stated that the events of the last few weeks do not represent the true character of the Imo people and he assured the people that the government will not leave any stone unturned in going after and apprehending anyone or group perpetrating all the criminal activities in the state.

The governor sympathized with the families of those who lost their lives within the recent period of unrest, most especially the family of late Ahmed Gulak.

He also used the opportunity to debunk rumors making the rounds on social media that his convoy was attacked, noting that nothing of such has occurred.

In a similar vein, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has condemned the killing of Ahmed Gulak and urged security operatives to ensure that all those involved are made to pay for their gruesome deed.

The President of the Senate described the killing of the former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as one crime too many.

Gulak was killed by gunmen on Sunday morning in Imo State, a crime for which Lawan has called for a swift investigation to bring all who are involved to justice.

Lawan in a communique by his special media aide, Ola Awoniyi, noted that there can be no justification for the brutal murder of a human being and fellow citizen.

APC Mourns Gulak, Calls For National Unity To Fight Crimes

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is mourning the death of an APC chieftain in Imo State, Ahmed Gulak, calling for national unity to fight crimes.

APC in a statement by the National Secretary Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Senator John James Akpanudoedehe expressed shock over the killing of the APC chieftain.

The late Gulak died on Sunday morning after gunmen attacked a Toyota Camry cab conveying him and two others while on their way to the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri to catch a flight.

According to the police, the late APC chieftain left his hotel without informing the command and other security agencies in view of the fragile security situation in the South East, and Imo in particular.

He was said to have left without any security escorts while the cab driver took an irregular route to the airport before the gunmen shot at him at around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of the state.

The APC has “joined Nigerians to mourn his death and condemn his murderers in the strongest possible terms. We commiserate with his immediate family as well as the government and people of Adamawa State”.

The party described the late chieftain as a shining political leader and patriot.

“The APC as all well-meaning Nigerians is calling for national unity to fight crimes in the country and urge relevant security agencies to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to track down and swiftly bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.

“While the majority of Nigerians sympathise with the victims of crimes in the country, it is discernible that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is apparently excited about the security incidents being perpetrated by evil-doers against the citizens”.

The APC reiterated the need for continuous support and cooperation with the security services who put their lives on the line to “protect us and our property”.

 

Police Kill Murderers Of Ahmed Gulak, Recover Ammunition And Vehicles

The Imo State Police Command has neutralised the suspected killers of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Gulak, and recovered ammunition and vehicles from them. 

A statement issued by the police on Sunday night noted that some of the arms recovered from the attackers included three AK 47 rifles, one pistol, five AK 47 magazines with 92 rounds of live ammunition.

According to the statement, “Eyewitness account, especially the account given by the driver of the vehicle that was conveying Ahmed Gulak to the Airport before the attack, gave a vivid description of the assailants and the vehicles they used in carrying out the attack.

“The assailants were said to have used a Toyota Camry 2005 model with silver color; Toyota Sienna 1998 Model with golden color; Toyota Hilux with white color; and a Lexus RX 330 with golden Color. (Registration numbers are withheld for security reasons).

“Having established the identity of the assailants and the description of the vehicles used in carrying out the attack, the teams further got details of the direction the hoodlums have taken. With further leads, the team was able to establish the location of the suspects.

“The suspects were rounded up at Afor Enyiogugu junction in Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area. The hoodlums were met distributing onions to locals from a trailer they confiscated. The trailer was loaded with onions from the Northern region of Nigeria.”

It explained that on sighting the police, the hoodlums providing security coverage to those sharing the onions opened fire on the Police teams.

“The gallant and battle-ready Police Officers swiftly returned the fire. The six hoodlums who carried out the killings and four other members of their gang were fatally injured,” the security agency added. “Three out of the four vehicles used in attacking Gulak were recovered.”

Gulak was killed around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Sam Mbakwe Airport road in Owerri, Imo State on Sunday morning.

Sources told Channels Television that Gulak who was a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was heading to the airport when the assailants attacked him and shot him on the spot.

Gulak was trailed from his hotel room to the spot where he was killed.

The statement added that “The assailants were identified as members of the proscribed IPOB and ESN. The driver who drove late Ahmed Gulak and a co- victim who survived have all identified the dead body of the IPOB/ESN members positively as their attackers and also identified the three vehicles recovered as those used by the attackers.”

On 30th May, 2021 following a distress received by the Command on the gruesome murder of Ahmed Gulak, Police Special Forces made up of Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Police Mobile Force (PMF) and Tactical Units from the command were deployed to the scene at Obiangwu Junction at Ngorokpala LGA of Imo state. The teams were given a clear instruction to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the act with a view of bringing them to justice.

2. 5. Three AK 47 Rifles, one Pistol, five AK 47 magazines with ninety two rounds of live ammunition and criminal charms were recovered.

6. The Commissioner of Police Imo State, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc commended the gallant effort of the team and admonished them to continue to protect the public space.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has described as shocking the gruesome murder of a former Speaker of the Adamawa State Assembly and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Governor Fintiri said the death of Ahmed Gulak is painful and is a reflection of the wickedness of the wicked.

Fintiri while comforting the Nation, the All Progressives Congress, and his immediate family, described the late Gulak as a witty, determined, and practical Politician whose rise in life was as a result of sheer hard work.

“It is unfortunate that death has taken from us The Rt. Hon Ahmed Gulak in such a gruesome manner. He was a lively Politician who loved and worked with everyone, and always held the interests of the country at heart”.

Recalling his interactions with the late Gulak, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri said “He was a brother and a mentor, and a fighter for human rights as a lawyer. Madagali community has lost a true son”.

The Governor noted that “Our Country has lost an astute fighter for human rights. We all remember how passionate he fought for the plight of those displaced by insurgency and the downtrodden”.

He described the late Ahmed Gulak as a “Towering symbol of family values and the unity of the Marghi People as well as the entire State”.

The Rt. Hon Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri wished the family of the departed Politician God’s grace and comfort as they come to terms with his demise.

“Death has robbed Adamawa of a prominent leader whose contribution to the integration and progress of the State shall be sorely missed. Certainly, we mourn a great man who cherished and worked for the peaceful Co-existence of Adamawa People”.

While condoling the family for this great loss, Governor Fintiri prayed Allah to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss and for Allah to grant the deceased Aljanna Firdaus and forgive his imperfections.

“The Government and People of Adamawa stand in solidarity with the family, Marghi Community and all those who mourn him around the Country”.

Gulak, the headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, is currently under attack by Boko Haram terrorists. 

The Adamawa State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Ahmad Sajoh, told Channels Television that the military and the insurgents were engaged in a fierce battle with residents fleeing for their lives.

According to him, the vigilance group in the town and the hunters association are assisting the military in a bid to repel the attack and gunshots can be heard all over.

Many scared residents have fled the town and are hiding in the bushes, mountains, and hills.

The Chairman of Madagali local government area, Alhaji Mohammed Yusuf, also confirmed the attack to our correspondent in Yola.

He described the attack as very heavy and likely to result in the loss of lives.

According to Yusuf, tonight’s attack comes barely 24 hours after two male suicide bombers entered the home of a family in Tsilah village near Madagali and held a woman and her daughter hostage.

Thereafter, they detonated the explosives strapped to their bodies killing both of them, the woman and her baby in the process.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Adamawa State Command, SP Othman Abubakar, when contacted, said he would call back with information.

He has yet to do that, however.

Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Commissioner for Information said the government is monitoring the situation.

Today attack also comes less than 10 days after two female suicide bombers attacked Dar, a village near Gulak.

The first of the two attackers detonated the improvised device strapped to her body around 8 pm on Saturday, October 28, while the second did the same around 7 am on Sunday, October 29.

A woman with an eight-month-old baby strapped to her back was hit by the second attack (on October 29) and lost an eye, while her baby sustained minor injuries in that attack, which is believed to have been targeted at a church.

 

Nigerian Troops Stabilise Bama, Others

TroopsThe Defence Headquarters on Thursday, has again given re-assurances that the battle with insurgents in the North East parts of the country is achieving what it calls, impressive results.

In a tweet on its handle, the Defence Headquarters said that Bama, Gwoza, Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gamboru Ngala and other towns and villages in the region are being stabilized through ongoing highly coordinated air and land operations against fleeing terrorists.

According to the military, “the efforts are yielding impressive results in the overall move to rid the areas of terrorists activities.”

It, however, frowned at attempts in some quarters to cause panic and chaos in the region by deliberately ignoring visible formidable security measures and reporting negativity.

It called the approach of the international media, alarmist, saying that Maiduguri, the Borno State capital is safe unlike what is reported by the foreign media.

In the meantime, citizens have been asked to remain vigilant as they go about their lawful business in these towns in Borno State.

“Meanwhile situation in Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gwoza, Bama, Gamboru Ngala and other parts of the North East is being stabilized as highly coordinated air and land operations are ongoing.

“The efforts are yielding impressive results in the overall move to rid the areas of terrorists activities.”

Gunmen kill 5 policemen in Adamawa

Five policemen have been reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen in Gulak, a town in Madagali local government area of Adamawa state.

The five policemen were attacked at their duty post in the early hours of Friday in Gulak, which is the home town of the special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on political matters, Ahmadu Ali Gulak.

Reports from Madagali, a border local government between Adamawa and Borno states indicated that the gunmen numbering about 30, over powered the Madagali Police Divisional headquarters and carted away some arms before setting the station ablaze.

The assailants killed the three policemen on duty.

It was gathered that the unidentified gunmen later attacked two banks in the area where two policemen attached to the banks were also killed during the attack.

Confirming the attacks, police spokesperson, ASP Yoila Nemuel said three policemen were killed in the attack and no arrest has been made as at the time of this report.

According to ASP Nemuel, some policemen were killed in a robbery attempt on First Bank in Gulak, stressing that the bank was the target of the attackers.
