President Buhari Initiating Dialogue With South-East Leaders – Ngige

President Muhammadu Buhari has affirmed that dialogue is the way to go to resolve the security situation in the south-east.

This is according to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, alongside the President’s Chief Of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.

Addressing state house correspondents after the meeting, Senator Ngige said the President has also enabled series of dialogues to be held with leaders in the region.

He added that discussions at the meeting equally encapsulated what the south-east is demanding from the Federal Government as well as what the government plans to do for the region to assuage the feelings of the people.

He further disclosed that complaints from the national labour union regarding a breach of agreement had reached the President and they have begun plans to halt any further friction in the midst of the fragile situation within Kaduna State.

Meanwhile, members of the South East Governors’ Forum have condemned the activities of secessionist groups in the region and other parts of the country.

They distanced themselves from the agitations of such groups and frowned on the violence that ensued which led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties.

In a bid to tackle the security challenges and restore peace in the region, the governors went beyond their political differences and met on Saturday in Enugu State.

“We condemn in totality, the activities of violent secessionist groups in the South East and elsewhere; we firmly proclaim that we do not support them, they do not speak for South East,” said the Chairman of the Forum and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, at the end of the meeting.

Secession Agitation: To Say We Are Silent Is Not Correct – South East Leaders

Leaders in the South East have faulted the notion that they have been unbothered about the agitation for secession by some youths in the region.

Amid the continuous call for a breakaway from Nigeria by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the leaders said they have risen to the occasion at various times in the past and recently.

Ebonyi State Governor and the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, David Umahi, briefed reporters at the end of a meeting of governors, ministers, as well as religious and traditional leaders in the region on Saturday in Enugu State.

“The impression that South East leaders are silent over some of our youths’ agitation for secession is not correct; South East Governors, Ohanaeze President, National Assembly members, notable leaders had come out publicly many times in the past to speak against such agitations,” he said.

The governor added, “We condemn in totality, the activities of violent secessionist groups in the South East and elsewhere, we firmly proclaim that we do not support them, they do not speak for South East.

“In order not to mismanage the unfortunate situation, South East leaders have set up a committee to engage such youths to stop and allow elders speak to address such fears.”

He explained that arising from a meeting held on Friday last week with a presidential team led by the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi, they hold a further discussion to articulate their position.

Governor Umahi affirmed that the people of the South East were committed to one united Nigeria under a platform of justice, equity of rights, fairness, love, and respect for one another.

According to him, the leaders have noted the threats by some groups against the people of the South East and will protect them and everyone from other regions.

The governor, however, pleaded with leaders of other regions to protect the Igbo people living in their regions.

He also called on members of the National Assembly from the region to support the creation of state police in the ongoing constitutional amendment.

“We condemn the killing of security agencies, burning of strategic infrastructure, and killing of civilians in South East and other regions. We request our security agencies to please discharge their duties within the rules of engagement and the law.

“Meeting directed our governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to liaise with indigenes from the northern part of Nigeria and indigenes of other regions of the nation Nigeria to assure them of their people’s safety in South East,” Governor Umahi briefed.

Anglican Bishop Advises FG To Hold Talks With IPOB Agitators

The Bishop of Anglican Church of Kaduna Diocese, Rt Reverend Timothy Yahaya has advised the Federal Government to hold talks with members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as part of efforts to quell agitations by the group.

He blamed the agitations on the marginalisation and segregation of the South East people by the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and asked that they should be brought to a discussion table for the government to listen to their grievances and possibly resolve them for the interest of peace and stability of the country.

While stating that IPOB has genuine reasons to agitate due to the politics of imbalance against the southeast, the cleric, however, noted that the situation must be handled with caution in order not to throw the country into crisis.

On the rising insecurity in the country, the Bishop also expressed concern that the unfortunate increase in the attacks, with increasing targets at schools in remote communities in the North West and North East geographical zones, will likely pose a major setback in the development of education and future of young people who might be forced to drop out of school.

He, therefore, called for the full implementation of the safe school initiative that was introduced in 2014 to safeguard the schools and students, while also asking the National Assembly to urgently investigate the utilisation of funds meant for the initiative.

Security Agencies Carrying Out ‘Genocide’ In South-East – Igbo Elders

Chairman of the Igbo Elders Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, addressed journalists on June 11, 2021 in Abuja.
Chairman of the Igbo Elders Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, addressed journalists on June 11, 2021 in Abuja.

The Igbo Elders Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday accused security agencies of indiscriminately killing Igbo youths in the South-East, in the guise of fighting IPOB and ESN, two separatist groups.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Chairman of the group, a former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, said dozens of young people, mostly male, are being extrajudicially executed on a daily basis by security operatives in the region.

“We condemn without any reservation the destruction of public properties in the South-East, because it is not in our character to indulge in arson, brigandage,” Ezeife said.

“We believe however that it is not fair and just to use a sledge hammer to kill harmless flies.

“Security agencies now indiscriminately invade private homes at odd hours, in the same guise of fishing out presumed IPOB and ESN members.

“They arrest men and sometimes shoot innocent and hapless youths.

“We therefore call on President Muhamamdu Buhari, the United Nations, the European Union, African Union, ECOWAS, to take urgent and necessary action to stop the current genocide against the Igbos in the South-East and parts of the South-South.”

‘In the language they understand’

President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier this month threatened to deal with IPOB “in the language they understand”, a statement that sparked angry reactions from many Nigerians as it referenced Nigeria’s bloody civil war.

Millions of Igbos died during the civil war.

However, the Muhammadu Buhari administration has since doubled down on its decision to go on the offensive against IPOB members, who have been designated as terrorists.

IPOB is advocating the breakaway of a chunk of the country’s southern region to create the Republic of Biafra.

“A terrorist organisation (IPOB) poses a significant threat to the safety and security of Nigerian citizens,” the Presidency said in a statement on Saturday.

“When the President said that they will be treated ‘in a language they understand,’ he merely reiterated that their force shall be met with force. It is a basic principle of security services response world over.

“This is not promotion of hate, but a pledge to uphold citizens’ right to freedom from harm. The government cannot be expected to capitulate to terrorists.”

Gulak’s Death: A Clear Case Of Political Assassination – Gov Uzodinma

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has expressed shock over the killing of APC stalwart, Ahmed Gulak, describing the incident as an unfortunate clear case of political assassination.

Addressing Imo people in a broadcast at the Government House in Owerri the Imo State capital, the governor said he is really saddened by the gruesome murder which underscores the ugly security situation in Imo State in recent times.

Uzodinma in his oration on Monday stated that the events of the last few weeks do not represent the true character of the Imo people and he assured the people that the government will not leave any stone unturned in going after and apprehending anyone or group perpetrating all the criminal activities in the state.

The governor sympathized with the families of those who lost their lives within the recent period of unrest, most especially the family of late Ahmed Gulak.

He also used the opportunity to debunk rumors making the rounds on social media that his convoy was attacked, noting that nothing of such has occurred.

In a similar vein, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has condemned the killing of Ahmed Gulak and urged security operatives to ensure that all those involved are made to pay for their gruesome deed.

The President of the Senate described the killing of the former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as one crime too many.

Gulak was killed by gunmen on Sunday morning in Imo State, a crime for which Lawan has called for a swift investigation to bring all who are involved to justice.

Lawan in a communique by his special media aide, Ola Awoniyi, noted that there can be no justification for the brutal murder of a human being and fellow citizen.

He, however, appealed for restraint on the part of those calling for revenge, saying they should allow the relevant authorities to serve justice on the matter as the injury of the crime was inflicted on Nigeria as a whole.

The Senate President condoled with the family and friends of the departed as well as the government and people of Adamawa State on the incident.

Mr Audu Ogbeh

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has warned against the killing of northerners residing or visiting any part of the southern region, particularly in the southeast zone.

This follows the gruesome killing of a former APC Chieftain Ahmed Gulak.

The national chairman of the ACF and former minister of agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, called on security agencies to do everything possible to apprehend those who assassinated mister Gulak and bring them to justice.

In a communique on Monday, Ogbe said the lives of northerners, and indeed of all Nigerians matter, adding that the ACF cannot keep mute when its people, and indeed all Nigerians are murdered in cold blood by misguided and atrocious people.

The ACF also cautioned all northerners traveling to the southeast to weigh the importance of such trips.

IPOB Cannot Give Sit-At-Home Order In Rivers – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike on Monday said the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) cannot issue a sit-at-home order to the people of Rivers State.

Wike stated this on Channels Television’s Politics Today, adding that Rivers is a South-South state and not one of the South-Eastern states.

IPOB had through its spokesperson, Emma Powerful said human and vehicular movements would be restricted across the South-East on Monday to mark the 54th anniversary of Biafra.

In compliance with this, economic and commercial activities came to a standstill in the South-East region of the country.

But Wike faulted the directive, saying he is not against the activities of the outlawed group in the eastern part of the country.

“IPOB cannot make an order to say sit at home in Rivers State. I have said so clearly before because it does not exist in Rivers State,” he said.

“Rivers State is not part of South-East. Rivers State is South-South, we are in the Niger Delta. I am not saying whether the people in the South-East should not obey what IPOB has said or not. But they cannot give order to Rivers people to sit at home.”

Streets in Owerri, Imo State capital were empty. Businesses, schools, and other major economic hubs were shut. Vehicular movements were also grounded as many residents observed the order.

However, there was a heavy presence of security operatives in strategic places in the city to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

In Abia State, streets were deserted and shops are under lock and key while in Anambra State, the situation is the same. Economic and social activities have been halted and there is a heavy security presence in major locations of the state to maintain law and order.

The situation is not too different in Ebonyi State as few vehicles were seen on the highway. The inner streets were deserted with security men positioned at different locations.

The state governor David Umahi had earlier instructed that no resident will be penalised if he or she chooses to stay at home.

Many businesses in Delta State capital, Asaba were also shut as residents comply with the sit-at-home order. Banks and major shopping malls were closed.

At the popular wood market along the Asaba-Onitsha expressway, most shops were closed with a few traders around.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said it has stormed a “terrorist enclave” run by members of the Eastern Security Network in Rivers State and killed at least seven persons.

ESN is the military arm of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which is seeking the creation of a Biafra nation carved out of Southern Nigeria.

A Nigerian court has outlawed IPOB and the Federal Government has designated the group as terrorists.

“Troops of 6 Division Garrison, Port Harcourt and 29 Battalion in conjunction with operatives of Nigerian Police, DSS, and NSCDC on Thursday, 27 May 2021, conducted a Clearance/Raid Operation at suspected IPOB/ESN enclaves at Agbomchia Forest along Pipeline Road Ogali/Komkom Boundary between Eleme and Oyigbo LGA’s of Rivers State,” a statement signed by army spokesman, Brigadier-General Mohammed Yerima said on Saturday.

“In the fire fight that ensued during the Clearance/Raid Operation, 7 IPOB/ESN members were neutralized while 5 suspects arrested.

“Various items belonging to the criminals including arms and ammunition were also recovered by the security forces. The camp was promptly destroyed while suspects and corpses were handed over to the Police for further actions.

“There was no casualty on own troops and other security operatives as they have returned back to base in high morale.

“The Nigerian Army urges members of the public to always avail the troops with accurate and timely information that will help in tracking down and neutralise the so-called Unknown Gunmen (UGM) who are terrorizing the region.”

The second-in-command to Ikonso, the neutralised commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/ Eastern Security Network (ESN) has been arrested.

Awurum Eze was nabbed by security operatives in Aba, the commercial centre of Abia State in the south-east region of the country.

The Director of Public Relations at the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a statement on Wednesday.

Forty-eight years old Eze is a native of Umoneke Nta in Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

On Tuesday last week, the IPOB member was said to have escaped when operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was reportedly hiding.

“Intensive manhunt was, thereafter, launched towards tracing and arresting him,” said the army spokesman.

He added, “He (Eze) was eventually apprehended on Wednesday, 12 May 2022, in Aba after weeks of unrelenting follow-ups by operatives.”

According to Yerima, Eze is one of the main sponsors of the numerous killings in Imo State and has been on the wanted list of security agents for more than three months.

Many of the arrested IPOB members were said to have mentioned him as their key sponsor, mastermind, and second-in-command to late Ikonso, the army spokesman noted in the statement.

“According to them (the arrested suspects), amongst all their leaders in Imo State, only Ikonso and Awurum have a direct communication link with Nnamdi Kanu.

He stated, “He can be seen in several photographs posing with the fugitive terrorist leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Investigation by the combined team of security operatives continues.”

On April 24, the army confirmed the death of Ikonson – the overall commander and vice president of the secessionist group – by a combined team of security forces.

He was said to have been killed in a raid on the operational headquarters of the IPOB/ESN in Awomama Village in Oru East local government area of Imo State.

The operation was carried out by troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, as well as operatives of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and Department of State Services (DSS).

At Least Eight Gunmen Killed In Attempted Attack On Imo Police Station

No fewer than eight gunmen have been killed in an encounter with the police in the Orlu area of Imo State, security sources confirmed on Friday.

A police source told Channels Television that the hoodlums were on their way to attack Orlu Police Station on Thursday evening.

They were, however, ambushed and killed on Thursday in a joint counter-attack by the military and police operatives.

The security sources confirmed that several stolen vehicles used by the militants in their operation were also recovered. A video of them earlier setting out for the attack has also been released.

The video showed the militants boarding vehicles as they embarked on the twatted operation.

Orlu, the location of the attack is the second-largest city in Southeast Nigeria.

Ikonso was also said to be the coordinator of all the operations in the South-East, including the attack on the Imo Police Headquarters on April 5 and several other attacks on security and military personnel and facilities.

Security operatives were said to have stormed Awomamma village, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, where they engaged the gunmen in exchange for fire.

Commander Ikonso, alongside six other gunmen, eventually fell to the superior firepower of the security operatives.

Ikonso is said to have carried out series of violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the South-East and South-South of the country.

The operation is part of deliberate efforts by the police and other security forces to quell the activities of insurgents in Imo State and other states of the southeast and South-South region of the country.

Several sophisticated weapons including six AK-47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different caliber, and charms meant to ward off bullets were recovered from the gunmen.

‘Uzodinma Has Stirred The Hornets’ Nest’: IPOB Reacts To Killing Of Commander

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted to the killing of one of its leaders, saying Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, “will pay dearly”.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said it had led a combined team of security forces to raid “the operational Headquarters of the IPOB/ESN terrorists in Awomama Village, Oru East LGA of Imo State.”

During the raid, Ikonso – who the Army said was the mastermind of the April 5 attacks on the Imo State Police Command and the Owerri Correctional Center, in addition to multiple attacks in the South East and South South regions – was neutralised along with six of his top Commanders.

IPOB, in a statement signed by spokesman Emma Powerful on Saturday, said “the killing of the heroic innocent Biafrans protecting our communities and towns from Fulani terrorists herdsmen masquerading as cattle herders in cold blood is very painful.”

The statement added that “the Supreme Court Administrator of Imo State Hope Uzodinma and all those who had a hand in this wickedness will pay dearly.

“Hope Uzodinma and his cowardly Nigerian security agencies that cannot confront Fulani terrorists but only flex their muscles when they see Biafra agitators. For murdering Ikonso, the ESN unit COMMANDER in in cold blood, Uzodima has stirred the hornet nest! He should get ready for a sting.

“Uzodima decided to kill Ikonso because he refused his offer to head Ebubeagu ghost security outfit formed by South East governors. Uzodima has tried but without success to lure ESN operatives into EBUBEAGU. He had made irresistible offers to them which were turned down, hence his resorting to elimination of these patriotic heroes who vowed never to betray Biafra.

“Hope Uzodinma sent a lot of emissaries to beg Ikonso and other ESN officers to join EBUBEAGU security outfit. So, because of their refusal to betray Biafra agitation and our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the hopeless governor mobilized joint security forces to attack them today.

“Contrary to claims by the cowardly security forces who flee from terrorists but kill innocent citizens, they were not able to peneterate into the camp of Eastern Security Network ESN. They only ambushed Ikonso but we promise them hell for this cowardly act!

“Hope Uzodima has murdered sleep, so he should be ready to stay awake! FULANI terrorists pretending as cattle sellers in Enugu destroyed Police van and attacked Government officials on lawful duty with AK-47 but no Army, police or DSS attacked them till now. But ESN operatives defending our communities against the terrorists are being hunted like games everyday. The world has kept quiet over this atrocity until we begin our own madness.

“Hope Uzodinma as you the body of Ikonso was paraded by Fulani Jihadists in police and Nigerian army, so shall it be your portion one day.”

The early morning Saturday raid was carried out by troops of “the Nigerian Army Nigerian Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS),” according to a statement signed by Army spokesman, Mohammed Yerima.

The operation was put in motion “following a detailed intelligence report on the location of the terrorists’ Operational Headquarters and the movement of the overall Commander popularly known as Ikonson Commander.”

The statement added that, “The IRT and DSS teams along with troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army have been on the trail of the terror group since the unfortunate attacks on the Imo State Police Command and the Owerri Correctional Center on 5 April 2021.

“The said Ikonson Commander who was the mastermind of those attacks in addition to multiple attacks in the South East and South South regions, was neutralised along with 6 of his top Commanders.

“The joint intelligence team had earlier interviewed several arrested IPOB/ESN terrorists in connection with the April 5 attacks and they all confessed that Ikonson Commander who was named as Vice President by their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was the one that mobilized men and resources as well as ordered and orchestrated the attacks on Owerri.

Some suspected IPOB arrested by police operatives in Imo State.

“They equally revealed that Ikonson was responsible for many other attacks on Police stations across the two geo-political zones.

“The intelligence team later tracked the IPOB/ESN top leader to his exact location in Awomama village where he (Ikonson) and his to Commanders were hibernating and plotting dastardly acts against the Nigerian state.

“On noticing the presence of the joint operations team, IPOB/ESN terrorists brought heavy volume of fire on the raiding team who swiftly responded and overwhelmed them with superior fire power that neutralised Ikonson and six of his top Commanders. Sadly however, a Second Lieutenant and three IRT operatives paid the supreme price in the fire fight that ensued. The four officers who fought gallantly have already been evacuated to a military facility in Owerri.

Some of the military uniforms and other exhibits receovered from the suspected IPOB members in Imo State.

“So far, 3 AK 47 riffles, a Toyota Sienna van belonging to the terrorists and several other items of value including drugs suspected to be psychotropic substances were recovered and are being processed by the intelligence team to assist in further investigations and operations in the area. The joint security team is already dominating the general area while preparations for further operations are in top gear.

“The neutralised Ikonson Commander had in several occasions posed for photographs with the fugitive leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.”

The statement further noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru has commended the security officials involved in the operation.

“He prayed for the repose of the souls of the gallant officers who lost their lives in the operation, stressing that their sacrifice will never be in vain.” the statement said.

“The Nigerian Army along with other security agencies will sustain intelligence-based kinetic operations in the South East and South South until the regions are free of terrorist activities.”
