Special Works Recruitment Is For Nigerians, Not An ‘APC Programme,’ Says Keyamo

File photo: The Minister of State for Labour, Mr Festus Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has restated that the Federal Government’s Special Works Programme (SPW) is for all Nigerians and not members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Keyamo said this in a series of tweets on his handle where he refuted claims that he ordered that the forms for the SPW be given to APC members.

According to him, the final list of those for the programme will be from the States’ Selection Committees.

“I have NOT directed that forms for the SPW be distributed to APC Ward leaders to give to party members,” he said.

“Any of such list will be discountenanced. THIS IS NOT AN APC PROGRAMME but a programme FOR ALL NIGERIANS. We shall ONLY accept final lists from the States’ Selection Committees.”

Similarly, he called on Nigerians to disregard messages telling them to visit offices of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) for registration.

File photo: The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, leaves a meeting with members of the Senate and House Joint Committee on Labour at the National Assembly in Abuja on June 30, 2020.

Keyamo said the rumoured registration for the SPW at NDE offices will be a breach of the country’s COVID-19 guidelines.

“This will breach COVID-19 guidelines and it will not ensure we strictly achieve the 1000 per LGA,” he added.

“The selection will be done from LGA to LGA, not in States’ NDE offices.”

Country-Wide Policy

The SPW is a post-COVID-19 poverty alleviation programme, approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, under which 1,000 persons are to be employed from each of the 774 Local Government Areas in the country.

The initiative is expected to commence on October 1 and each beneficiary will be paid N20,000 monthly to carry out public works.

Job Creation: Buhari’s Govt Has Outperformed Its Projection – Keyamo

The President Muhammadu Buhari government has outperformed its job creation projection, according to the Minister of State for Labour, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN).

Mr Keyamo made the comment on Sunday night during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He said when all indices are taken into consideration, the present government since it came into power in 2015, has done better in the area of job creation than it had projected.

“Absolutely,” he said when asked if the Buhari government has done well in its job creation drive. “If you take all the indices into consideration, I think this present administration has outperformed what the projection should have been.”

The Minister, however, admitted that the constantly growing Nigerian population is an age-long issue which makes it look like the present government has not done enough in creating jobs.

Keyamo explained that “It is not that jobs are not been created, it is just that the populace is growing far more than the jobs that are being created. And this is an age-long problem that we have always had in this country.”

While citing examples of the government’s effort at making jobs available for Nigerians, he said: “the SMEs are there, N-Power is there, the Trader Moni is there, small loans to businesses are there; they give small loans to different businesses at different levels.“

Also, he added that at “the National Directorate of Employment over which I superintend as minister; we have so many programmes under the NDE by which we are skilling up the populace.”

Skilling Up

Furthermore, he restated that the major thrust of the Buhari government is to empower the population so they can be employers of labour and not absorbing Nigerians into the public service as many would think.

“The basic policy thrust of this administration is to skill up the population, the different strata of the populace,” he explained. “Skill them up so they can be self-employed; in such a way that they can also employ others into their small businesses.”

Keyamo: ‘Why Drag Adeleke When Buhari Does Not Need WAEC Certificate’ – Nigerians React

Reactions have trailed a comment by Festus Keyamo (SAN) suggesting that one does not need to have a WAEC certificate to become President of Nigeria.

Keyamo who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics argued that beyond the WAEC certificate, there are other levels of qualification to run for the post of President in Nigeria.

The Senior Advocate’s comment stirred varied reactions across the nation.

Following his interview and comment which some have termed as controversial, Nigerians took to social media to air their views on the subject matter, many holding views that were at variance with that of Keyamo.

Below are some reactions as polled from Twitter.

In defence of his statement on Channels Television, Keyamo has also taken to Twitter to shed more light on the certificate issue.

Below are Keyamo’s tweets in which he further clarified how the issue of not having a WAEC certificate differs from the forgery of a certificate as with the case of Senator Ademola Adeleke in Osun State.

Atiku Must Pick Up His Phone To Call President Buhari, Says Keyamo

Atiku and Buhari Photos: Channels TV/Sodiq Adelakun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council Director, Strategic Communications, Festus Keyamo, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party and its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to call President Muhammadu Buhari and congratulate him on his maintaining lead.

In a statement by the campaign spokesman, Keyamo urged the opposition party to call President Buhari, if they feel they have lost the Presidential elections.

“This is not the time to sacrifice the country for personal ambition. If they feel they have lost (as their statement clearly indicates), Atiku Abubakar must pick up his phone to make that famous call to President Muhammadu Buhari. The world is watching him and so are Nigerians”.

Read Full Statement Below:

We have just read with great consternation the Press Statement of the National Chairman of PDP rejecting the results as being announced presently by INEC in Abuja.

The simple questions we ask the PDP and Atiku’s Campaign team are as follows:

(1)        How come the PDP is rejecting results that have not been fully and completely announced? How can one reject the result of an uncompleted game? The process of an election does not end until the final collation and announcement of results.

READ ALSOSaraki Loses Senatorial Seat To APC’s Oloriegbe

(2)        Is the PDP rejecting the totality of the results nationwide? If yes, does it mean they also reject the results that would be announced later by INEC which may indicate that they have won in certain areas? Are they also rejecting the results already announced that indicate they won in some areas? For instance, are they rejecting the results of the FCT already announced in which they won?

(3)        If indeed they are only rejecting areas where they lost, are they implying that it is only in areas where they won that can be adjudged free and fair and all areas where they lost must be adjudged rigged? Is that the mentality of true democrats?

In the PDP statement, it is curious that they rejected the results as being announced, yet they claim they are coasting to victory. What kind of logic is that? What kind of confusion is now reigning in the minds of the top hierarchy of the PDP that they can spew such illogicality?

It is now obvious that the top hierarchy of the PDP is hysterical and nervous. We urge them to calm down. Obviously, this is the first time they are sensing a massive loss of an election as an opposition party.

It is a new experience for them. They are confused and disoriented. For many years, they were used to manipulating the instruments of State to just write results and announce themselves as winners. As such they have a sense of entitlement to these instruments of State that they could not fully manipulate this time because President Muhammadu Buhari insisted on a level plain field for all.

We advise the PDP that as an opposition party for many years, we have been down this road before. This is not the time to sacrifice the country for personal ambition. If they feel they have lost (as their statement clearly indicates), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar must pick up his phone to make that famous call to President Muhammadu Buhari. The world is watching him and so are Nigerians.

Finally, we urge INEC, Nigerians and our international friends not to be swayed by these infantile antics of the PDP. The process of collation and announcement that is on-going should be done to its logical conclusion after which anyone who is aggrieved should take full advantage of the provisions of the law.

Atiku’s Endorsement: Keyamo Challenges Afenifere, Ohaneze, Others To ‘Popularity Contest’

Festus Keyamo, SAN, has said that the Leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, and a faction of Afenifere that recently endorsed Atiku Abubakar, are persons who the masses do not listen to anymore.

The official spokesperson of the APC Presidential Campaign, made this statement while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Keyamo said, “There is nothing that is as fraudulent as known PDP members and sympathizers putting on the apparel of socio-political groups and endorsing their own political parties”.

He further noted that “President Buhari is an unusual leader, who has managed to navigate his way through these middlemen and he has reached the people directly in this country”.

The Senior Advocate went on to challenge the socio-political groups to a popularity contest in states where President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to hold his presidential campaign.

He said, “I want to challenge the so-called groups now, we are still on our campaign rally, let them call a rally the same day we arrive their region, I am challenging them openly, I am challenging the faction of Afenifere, we have not gone to Lagos, we have not gone to Ekiti, the day we are arriving Lagos, I am challenging Afenifere to call a rally of Yoruba people at another venue in Lagos and let us see the turn out”.

The challenge was also thrown to the other socio-political groups including the Middle Belt Forum.

“I am challenging the Middle Belt forum, we have not gone to Benue, we have not gone to other places; to know how connected you are with your people, I challenge you to call a rally the same day we are arriving the middle belt and let us see the turn out at your rally and our rally” Keyamo challenged.

The lawyer argued that the leader of these regions, do not have the ears of the people again.

He said, “The people don’t listen to them again, these are people who have over time represented their own interest and of course they are in tune with the philosophy of Atiku Abubakar who says that he will enrich his own friends. So like bees are attracted to honey, these people are attracted to Atiku Abubakar who wants to enrich his friends”.

Keyamo opined that the endorsement of Atiku Abubakar by the Leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, and a faction of Afenifere, is inconsequential.

Atiku Will Beat Buhari 60-40 Percent In North-West — Galadima

The Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign organisation, Buba Galadima has said that Atiku Abubakar will defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in the Northwest, when the presidential polls hold, this February.

“I want to say that in the Northwest, namely Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa and Kaduna, Atiku will defeat Buhari 60 to 40 per cent on the minimum” Galadima claimed.

The PDP spokesman made the assertion as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He also claimed that the PDP presidential candidate will divide the votes 50 to 50 with Buhari even in the president’s home state, Katsina.

Galadima also said that there is no likelihood of President Buhari defeating Atiku in the Northeast, except Borno where he opined that no elections are likely to hold because “20 local governments will be voting from Maiduguri IDP camps”.

He also said that President Buhari will lose his deposits in the Middle Belt, adding that the same feat will be experienced in the Southwest.

The PDP spokesman said he is confident that in the South-south and Southeast the opposition party will return nothing less than 85 per cent.

Galadima said that the mammoth crowd seen at venues of recent APC rallies are charades, he claims that the people were paid to attend the presidential campaigns of the ruling party.

He alleged that at “Every campaign that Buhari goes to in an APC controlled state, local governments are empowered with twenty to forty-five million naira to purchase people and bring them to these rallies, and suddenly Buhari starts addressing the crowd and they all disappear because they must fulfil the contract for which they were brought in “.

He claimed that in Kaduna, Atiku gathered twice the number that Buhari gathered, adding that the same feat was experienced in Kano.

“One Local Government rally by Kwankwaso is more than the global rally that was organised for Buhari after spending nearly one billion naira” Galadima said.

He also said that the present government is a government of exclusion, adding that it is a government operating on the theories of nepotism and bedevilled by corruption.

Galadima said, “It is shameful that somebody who rides on the issue of corruption will raise the hand of a thief, certified crook, and say this is our candidate”.

“In Kano, you have seen the President raising the hand of a corrupt individual, a corrupt person that the whole nation has seen taking bribes, they are talking of corruption, that man belongs to them.

“They brought people from Niger, my good friend the Sultanate of Damagaram and two Governors from the Niger Republic, they are already telling us that they will bring aliens to vote for them,” Galadima alleged.

Reacted to the recent endorsement of Atiku Abubakar by leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, and a faction of Afenifere.

He said those who endorsed Atiku are respected elder statesmen, adding that it was a clear show of unity by tribes and regions that previously do not see eye-to-eye.

Ignore Saraki’s “Fairy Tales” Regarding Oil And Gas Sector – Keyamo Tells Nigerians

Zakari: PDP Cannot Impose ‘Its Own Interpretation Of Fair Play’ On Nigerians – Keyamo
Festus Keyamo speaks during his appearance on Sunday Politics on December 9, 2018.

The official spokesperson of the APC Presidential Campaign, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has urged Nigerians to ignore claims by Senate President Bukola Saraki regarding an alleged fraud within the Oil and Gas sector.

Keyamo in a statement on Friday said the Director General (DG) of the PDP Presidential Campaign has resorted to a baseless campaign of calumny directed at the person of Mr. President, “Ahead of the looming defeat of the PDP at the Presidential polls next month”.

He said, “Dr. Bukola Saraki’s resort to poorly choreographed and worn-out political brinksmanship is fueled by the obvious absence of any credible agenda or bearing to present to Nigerians in their campaigns.

“In clear demonstration of hallucination with figures, Dr. Bukola Saraki claimed, in an interview with Channels Television a few days ago, that Nigeria’s petrol consumption is about 20-22 million Iitres per day and that the current import level of about 50million litres is a scam and fraudulent.

“However, the same Dr. Bukola Saraki was in the 7th Senate and knows very well that in 2014 and part of 2015, the PDP Government that was in power was reporting to Nigerians daily PMS consumption of 35-40 million litres per day. (In January, 2014 for example, the average monthly consumption was 38 million Iitres per day. By January, 2015 under the same government of PDP, they reported 36 milIion Iitres per day and March 2015, the daily consumption reported by PDP government was 45 million Iitres per day, whilst importing at levels above 80million litres per day).

“Strangely, years later, the PDP Campaign DG is peddling a phantom fuel consumption figure of 20-22 million litres per day.

“The PDP Chief Campaigner discountenanced the obvious fact that within the last three years of the current administration, the Nigerian economy that PDP left in comatose has been jump-started to vibrancy leading to remarkable changes in energy consumption needs and patterns.

“The allegation that the national oil company prevailed on Mr. President not to seek appropriation for subsidy and to rather treat it as cost under-recovery is not only laughable and mischievous, but it is a blatant lie.

“Verifiable records indicate that NNPC has never claimed subsidy payment from any government in its history of operation. All NNPC’s transactions in this regard have been treated as product costs under-recovery.

“The Corporation, like any other business entity, does its business and recovers its cost from its revenues.

“It is instructive to note that in his rush to indict the NNPC and the President, willy-nilly, Dr. Bukola Saraki forgot that a Senate Committee was set up by him to investigate the intervention of NNPC in PMS imports.

“The mandate of the Committee includes volumes, costs, and any associated under-recoveries. The big question remains; why would he not wait for the outcome of the Committee he set up to investigate the matter? Is it because he believes the outcome of his Committee will not satisfy his predetermined mindset?

Keyamo there urged Nigerians to ignore the tantrums of Dr. Bukola Saraki as it concerns the oil and gas sector.

“Massive Fraud In The Oil Sector”

Senate President Bukola Saraki in an earlier interview with Channels Television alleged that there is massive fraud within the oil sector.

The lawmaker said applying subsidy on assumption that Nigeria consumes fifty million litres (50million litres) of fuel a day, is fraudulent.

Saraki said in the Jonathan administration subsidy was based on an assumption that the nation consumes 30million litres of fuel daily.

He added that he and some other lawmakers warned that the Jonathan government was condoning corruption “by over importing fuel and because of that we were losing a lot of money”.

The Senate President said the present government instead of changing the process, jerked up the importation by 20 million litres extra.

He said, “you would have thought that a government that was to fight corruption and prevent leakages would even if you are going to continue subsidy, ensure that it is better managed.”

Saraki said there is no way Nigerians can consume 50million litres a day, “it is just money being stolen,” he alleged.

Buhari’s Government Is Corrupt

Saraki says President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has lost its moral ground in the fight against corruption because of corrupt practices within the administration.

The Senate President in an exclusive interview with Channels Television’s Seun Okinbaloye said the Buhari-led government came in on a promise to oust corruption but have rather allowed a new set of corrupt officials to thrive.

Saraki said there is no way the present government can be speaking of integrity when it has “a member who has been found wanting, left without charge or prosecution”.

He said, in 2015 the Jonathan administration was ousted on three major promises which are: security, economic growth and the fight against corruption.

The lawmaker, however, opined that “Nigerians are not better off today than they were in 2015”.

Aircraft Purchase: Buhari Acted Under Doctrine Of Necessity – Keyamo

Festus Keyamo

The Spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo, has explained the withdrawal of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account for the purchase of Tucano Aircraft by the presidency.

Keyamo, who was a guest on Channels Television programme, Sunday Politics said President Buhari acted under the doctrine of necessity, noting that the President’s action was justifiable.

“Nigerians will understand that the President acted under necessity. In this case, there is justification for what Buhari did and that is found in the doctrine of necessity,” he said.

He explained that the purchase of Tucano Aircraft was done in the overall interest of Nigerians as it is aimed at combating terrorism and insurgency.

Keyamo, who is also a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) praised the Buhari administration for transparency in handling the affairs of the country.

This he explained was the reason why the United States of America sold the weapons to Nigeria.

“It is a credit to Mr President that he went back to the National Assembly to seek approval.

“Other Presidents did not do that at all. Obasanjo paid about $17 billion to pay the Paris club without even going back to the NASS even thereafter. So it is a huge credit to Buhari that he wants to still instill some financial discipline,” Keyamo said.

President Buhari had come under criticism especially by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the controversial purchase of the aircraft at the sum of $496 million.

The Senate had during its plenary last week Thursday asked Senate President Bukola Saraki to invoke Section 143 of the constitution in view of President Buhari’s approval of the extra-budgetary spending of 496 million dollars to purchase the aircraft.

In a motion moved by the Chairman Senate Committee on Public Account, Senator Mathew Urhogide, is of the opinion that “It’s a violation of Section 80 subsection 1, 2, 3, 4.

He said, “The procedure of the expenditure is wrong. There ought to be an appropriation before such expenditure. I hereby request that the Senate President should invoke Section 18 of the Constitution.”

Some Senators who expressed disapproval at the President’s action also moved for impeachment proceedings be levelled against President Buhari over moves to add the purchase meant to be delivered in 2020 in this year’s budget appropriation.

Kudos, Knocks As Buhari Appoints Keyamo As Campaign Spokesman

Keyamo

News that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, has been appointed as the spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election campaign organisation, attracted mixed reactions on Tuesday.

Mr Keyamo broke the news via his Twitter handle earlier in the day.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, signed the appointment letter and made a copy available to journalists.

Many Nigerians took to the social media to react to the development, which comes exactly 304 days to the general elections.

While some Nigerians expressed the belief that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria would do well in his new job,  others feel otherwise.

“I will be making a formal statement on this much later”.

Keyamo Demands Nigeria Police Apology To BBOG Members

Festus Keyamo

A human rights lawyer, Mr Festus Keyamo has demanded that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris and the Nigerian Police apologise to members of the BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) group.

Keyamo’s in a statement on Wednesday said the Nigerian Police should immediately apologise to the members of the group over their “illegal arrest.”

His comments come less than 24 hours after the police officers in Abuja accosted and arrested some BBOG members who were protesting against what they call high-level of insecurity in the country and they insisted that they have the right to stage a peaceful demonstration.

While the protesters were barricaded by policemen, the Convener of the group, Oby Ezekwesili told Channels Television that the Nigerian Police infringed on their fundamental rights to free movement.

In his reaction, the legal practitioner said the IGP should apologise to the group because that the right to peaceful demonstration is enshrined in the nation’s constitution.

According to him, the purported arrested came as a “shock, bewilderment and disillusionment coming on the heels of the recent illegal arrest and detention of some online journalists by the same Police, acting at the behest of the IGP.”

“I, therefore, call on the Nigerian Police to immediately apologise to the members of the group for this unwarranted, unjustified and provocative trespass on their persons and deprivation of their freedoms.

“I also reiterate my call for the removal of the Inspector-General of Police from office for these unpardonable and inexplicable infractions of the fundamental rights of citizens of our country,” he said.
