Ogun Govt. Begins Road Construction In Abeokuta

The Ogun State Government has commenced the construction of a 7.5km six-lane dual carriage, Ogun Standard Road, along the Enugada-Adatan-Ajitadun-Mokola-Ake axis in Abeokuta.

The State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, assured residents that the project and other ongoing projects across the state would be completed in record time.

While monitoring a demolition exercise to pave way for the road, Governor Amosun reaffirmed that his administration will not abandon any project.

He promised that more developmental projects that will be of immense benefit to Ogun citizens would be constructed before the end of his tenure.

The Deputy Governor, Yetunde Onanuga, also thanked the people for their cooperation, saying there was no resistance of any kind against the demolition.

According to her, it was an indication that the people appreciate the development government is bringing to the area.

On his part, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Olamilekan Adegbite, said the State Government is paying a total of eight billion Naira as compensation for the houses affected by the demolition exercise.

Adegbite, who revealed that about two billion Naira had already been disbursed, added that apart from payment of compensation, the State Government is also providing temporary relocation support for the aged and physically challenged affected by the demolition exercise.

Some of the residents who spoke to reporters, Mr Sina Akinpelu and Mrs Monsurat Akinbile, expressed satisfaction with the development.

They urged the State Government to fast track the compensation plan, as well as ensure timely completion of the project as promised.

This, he hopes to achieve by strengthening the existing law of the state against kidnapping and cultism, among other social vices.

He gave the assurance in Abeokuta, the state capital, while addressing members of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, during a walk against kidnapping, extra judicial killings, and corruption.

Also speaking against kidnapping, during a meeting with Assistant Inspector General of Police in January, Amosun stated that the menace is something all citizens must challenge.

“Kidnapping is so alien to us in this country, but all of a sudden, it raised its ugly head and I think we must frontally challenge it.

“We have the appropriate laws and we might have to review such laws. Let me use this opportunity and medium to send the right signals to all these criminals that Ogun state will not be comfort zone for them.”

Consequently, the governor has harped on the need for every resident of the state to be law abiding and give maximum support to the security agencies in the onerous task of ensuring adequate security of life and property.

He also gave an assurance that the perpetrators of any such crime, if caught, would be brought to book.

Nation Building: Amosun Tasks Individuals On Outstanding Role

“When award like this is given, for me it’s a call to more service.

“It’s a challenge because you’ll ask yourself, why am I single out, why are we being singled out to be given this award? It (means) they’ve seen some good things which we are doing.

“You have challenged me and this award is not for me, it is for the good people of Ogun State,” he said.

This challenge was given in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, at a one day climate change knowledge immersion workshop attended by participants from different part of the country.

The Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibril and the Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun has promised concrete actions by the Federal Government and Ogun state towards tackling the menace.

According to Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun while giving his speech at the one day workshop; He challenged industries operating in the state to adopt best practices to mitigate the effects of Greenhouse Gas Emission.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibrilthe, stated that “Climate change remains the defining challenge of our time, its effects and threats continue to stare us in the face, the gully erosion in the east and the desert encroachment in the north with its attendant negative effect on food production among other things.”

Directors and commissioners of environment from different parts of the state, other stakeholders were part of the ongoing conversations while calling for urgent actions among nations of the world.

However, the World Bank Group Practicing Manager, Mr Benoit Bosquet said that the continent of Africa will be more vulnerable with more deaths and decrease in agricultural production.

He has asked security operatives to be more proactive in this direction.

He was speaking in Abeokuta, the state capital when the Assistant Inspector General of Police paid him a visit in his office in the state capital.

The Governor promised to enforce the law of the state against kidnappers and other criminal tendencies, saying that the state will no longer be a comfort zone for criminals and criminality.

While giving an update on the abductees at the Turkish International College, Isheri in Ogun state, the newly posted AIG, Kayode Aderanti, gave the assurance that operatives were closing up on the abductors.

“I had the signal that the abducted children were about to be released, I had to move back to Lagos with the state commissioner of police, I came back this morning.

“I know how passionate you are about it. My intention was to present those children to you this morning but we could not make it happen.

“Our men are really working towards that, I spoke with them and they assured me that things are working well,” he concluded.

Former Officeholders Get 1.5bn Naira Severance Allowance In Ogun

The officeholders who served under former Governor Gbenga Daniel were issued their cheques one after the other on Wednesday during an event at the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta, the state’s capital.

In his address, Governor Amosun highlighted some of the successes recorded in the past five years in the areas of infrastructure and industrial development Ogun State in southwest Nigeria.

He also sought the continuous understanding and cooperation of all residents, in the mission to rebuild the socio-economic development of the state.

The governor revealed that over 13 billion Naira had been injected into the state’s economy for payment of gratuity and other obligations.

The state’s former Commissioner for Health, Abiodun Oduwole and erstwhile Commissioner for Water Resources, Kola Onadipe, commended Governor Amosun for his generosity.

A total of 663 former political officeholders who had served the state in their different capacities benefited from the gesture.

The team, under the aegis of the Uplift Development Foundation, the first lady’s pet programme, distributed rice and cash gift to residents of Ijebu Ode, Ado-Odo Ota, Abeokuta, Sagamu, Obada and Ewekoro among other areas in the state in southwest Nigeria.

Highlighting the significance of the exercise, Mrs Amosun said that the economic hardship facing Nigeria made the gesture necessary.

She stressed that the foundation decided to make the people happy and celebrate their Christmas with joy by reaching out to them.

The governor’s wife noted that the foundation would continue to uplift people and provide succor to the less privileged in the society, irrespective of their religion or political affiliation.

Amosun Denies Anointing Candidate For 2019 Governorship Election

He made the clarification in Abeokuta, the state capital at a meeting with members of the state executive of the All Progressive Congress (APC), members of the state executive council and members of state and national assemblies.

Amosun, while assuring residents of the state of more development, also denied any rift with a national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu.

“Let me say this, for us in Ogun state, at the appropriate time, we will gather our people together and say this is your son or daughter and whosoever it is will be the governor.

“This is Ogun state, we are not God, we are human but who is going to be the governor will be acceptable to all”.

“Imagine somebody writing that I said that Asiwaju will soon be finished politically in Lagos.

“They told me; I have not even read it – they do not know what they are saying. I am from Ogun state, whatever happens in other states I do not know, I don’t talk about what I don’t know”.

“I say it all the time that the Asiwaju you see, he didn’t give me any money but he was there when I needed him, I have said it times without number that my daddy would say: “won ki fi oju olore gbole o” I talk to him despite all these things you may want to say” the governor stressed.

Members of the party in the state and one of the national officers of the party also seized the occasion to pledge their unalloyed support, while expressing confidence over policies and programmes of the administration in the state.

“I will want us to give the governor all our loyalty because a lot has been happening among us, particularly among the party leaders in Ogun state.

“Our governor needs our loyalty at this time, I think we should as much as possible give our support to show appreciation.

“Nobody is leaving the APC, rather many people want to join the party, whatever you hear around are all rumours, our party is strong and will continue to be stronger” he concluded.

While asking party members not to be distracted by the antics of the opposition in the state, the governor however assured residents of the state of more development, saying that his performances so far, remains the selling point for the party in the state.

“On this occasion of your birthday, we celebrate you and your commitment to the socio-economic and political development of our dear nation, Nigeria,” the Governor said.

Governor Amosun added that, “at 74, the President’s work ethics, commitment to the Nigerian nation and style of leadership is indeed a great lesson to the younger generation.”
