Ondo Police Command Deploys Officers To Highways

Police Denies Reported Closure Of Ondo AssemblyOfficers and men of the Ondo State Police Command have been deployed to the Akure-Ilesa and the Owo- Ikare-Akoko Highways as well as some other roads across the state in order to combat criminal activities such as armed robbery and kidnapping.

Speaking to journalists during one of her visits to supervise operations on the highway, the State Commissioner of Police, Hilda Ibifuro- Harrison disclosed that the essence of the deployment is to ensure that the lives and property of people travelling on the road are safe and well secured.

The CP expressed sadness on the incident of armed robbery that took place on the highway in March, in which a former Managing Director of Daily Times, Onukaba Adinoyi-Ojo, lost his life.

She however thanked all stakeholders in the state including the government, traditional rulers, hunters, vigilanté groups and all security agencies for their support for the police in ensuring security.

Harrison also noted that the deployment of police on the Owo-Ikare roads in stop and search duties has actually helped in putting pressure on the abductors of a traditional ruler in the state, Oba Joel Sunday Daodu, the Oniyani of Iyani- Akoko, leading to his release by his captors.

Abducted Ondo Traditional Ruler Regains Freedom

Gunmen Kidnap Commissioner In Cross RiverThe Oniyani of Iyani Akoko, Oba Joel Daodu, who was abducted recently by gunmen along Owo/Ikare- Akoko highway in Ondo State, has been released.

Confirming the release, spokesman for the Ondo State Police Command, Mr Femi Joseph, said the monarch was seen walking by the roadside in Ayede-Ogbese, a small town along the Akure-Owo highway.

He noted that the traditional ruler has been taken to the police station in his town, adding that investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances around his abduction and apprehend his kidnappers.

Mr Joseph, however, told Channels Television that Oba Daodu did not inform the Police that any payment was made before he was released.

The abductors were said to have demanded for five million Naira as ransom to secure his release, a sum which was reportedly reduced to three million Naira.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Ondo State Governor, Segun Ajiboye, also confirmed the release of the traditional ruler to Channels Television.

Ondo Police Command Decorates 86 Newly Promoted Officers

nig-policeThe Ondo State Police Command has decorated 86 officers newly promoted from the rank of Assistant Superitendent to Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The Commissioner of Police In Ondo state, Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, decorated the newly promoted officers in her office at the command headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

In her address, the CP advised the officers that the promotion should come with higher responsibility, more diligence and commitment to duties.

She equally urged them to always be on top of their job and shun any act that could bring shame to the Nigerian Police Force.

“To promote 86 officers in a command is a thing to be thankful to God almighty for because if you work, you get rewarded and the reward is promotion and that is why all these persons who were ASPs before today have now become DSPs.

“I’ve charged them to appreciate that when you are given a higher rank, it needs higher responsibility and it means more diligence to the performance of your duties.”

On fighting crime in the state, the CP noted that the Police have made some arrests in connection with the recent killings in Ondo town and the suspects have been charged to court while some arms and ammunition have been recovered from them.

“Crime fighting is the business of the police, stay on top of your job and never bring shame to the Nigerian police force. A few days back we recorded some killings in Ondo town and with the help of the people of the state, we have been able to make arrests and recover some arms and ammunition and the persons arrested have been charged to court.”

Mrs Harrison then used the opportunity to appeal to residents to synergise with the police to ensure that the society is free of crime and is safer for everyone.

The Police boss also sensitised the people of the state on the recent development  in which some hoodlums block the highways at night in the bid to rob innocent travelers.

She urged residents to notify the police of any individuals who get on the road at night to commit crime.

“We cannot do it alone we must synergise with all citizens of the state to ensure we all sleep with our two eyes closed and the society is safer for us.

“We will be equal to the task to ensure we put on our highways very effective security but if you notice persons who wake up at night to get on the road to commit crime, please, report to the police.”

 

Some of the newly decorated officers, Henry Akingboju, Christiana Adewole and Yemi Ojumu, expressed their gladness and thanked the Police Service Commission, the Inspector General of Police as well as the Commissioner of Police.

They promised to be more diligent in their duties to the Nigerian people.

Abducted Ondo Monarch Regains Freedom

Ondo MonarchThe traditional ruler of Ode-Iyasan ‎community, in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Abiodun Oyewunmi, has regained freedom from his abductors.

The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, confirmed that the monarch regained his freedom at Gbelegun village, a riverine community in Edo State on Sunday morning.

He said that the traditional ruler was rescued through the combined efforts of the marine police, Police anti-kidnapping squad and some military officers.

The monarch was abducted from his palace by 10 armed men who invaded his palace at about 10:00pm on Tuesday.

The kidnappers were said to have arrived in the town through the Owena River fully armed and went straight to the traditional ruler’s palace and made away with him without any resistance from the palace guards.

Gunmen Kidnap Monarch In Ondo State

Ondo State, Oba Abiodun Oyewunmi, Gunmen, MonarchThe traditional ruler of Iyasan in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Abiodun Oyewunmi, has been kidnapped.

The monarch was reportedly taken away by 10 suspected gunmen who invaded his palace at about 10:00pm on Tuesday.

The kidnappers were said to have arrived in the town through the Owena River fully armed and went straight to the traditional ruler’s palace and made away with him without any resistance from the palace guards.

The abduction of the monarch was confirmed by the spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph.

Mr Joseph said that investigations have begun to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Accident Kills Two On Akure-Owo Highway

AccidentA ghastly motor accident has claimed the lives of two commuters along the Akure-Owo Federal Highway in southwest Nigeria.

The accident, which occurred when it was raining at about 6:30PM on Sunday, involved a tanker filled with diesel and two other commuter vehicles.

The tanker lost control and hit the two cars from behind. One of the cars was said to be empty while the other one was crushed with the two passengers in it.

Some of the sympathisers who spoke to Channels Television at the scene of the accident lamented the high rate of accidents in the area.

While some of the residents called for the dualisation ‎of the road, others asked for speed breakers to be constructed on the road.

They noted that very close to the scene is the Federal Government Girls’ College, Akure where travellers going to Ikare, Abuja and other towns on the route usually stand to get quick cabs.

While confirming the mishap, the Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Femi Joseph, said that the accident is being investigated.

He added that the victims were yet to be identified and appealed to members of the public whose relations are missing to contact Police authorities.

Police Arrest 114 Boko Haram Suspects In Ondo

police on boko haram suspectsThe Ondo State Police Command says it is interrogating 114 people who were arrested after detectives intercepted a truck conveying them in the state.

The people were said to be coming from Kebbi State and heading towards Ore town in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state before they were intercepted by the Police at Lipakala junction in Ondo town.

Speaking to Channels Television in Akure, Ondo State capital on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr Femi Joseph, said that 114 men were accosted in Ondo town travelling in a large truck on their way from Kebbi State.

“Our findings so far had not indicated that the men had any link with the dreaded Boko Haram sect, but be that as it may, we decided to keep them yesterday (Thursday) in our custody to further work on their claims in order to verify their claims.

“Some of them claimed to be farmers, some hunters, while few of them claimed to be traders.

“Actually, for real, we saw about eight dane guns in the vehicle, we saw a good number of hoes, we also saw substantial number of cutlasses, there was no record of ammunition,” he said.

The Ondo Police PRO further said, “These people said it is a seasonal thing – every season, they do come from the north most especially during the dry season to do some menial jobs down south here, after which they would go back to the north during the raining season.

“In the course of our investigation, we had to invite some Hausa community leaders, who testified to their claims.”

Police Discover Tunnel Behind A Bank In Ondo

police-on suspectsA Bank Surveillance Squad of the Ondo State Police Command has discovered a long tunnel dug by suspected armed robbers behind a branch of a first generation bank in Akure, the state’s Capital.

The State Police Commissioner, Michael Ogbodu, informed reporters of the development at a media briefing and parade of crime suspects at the Ondo State Police Command Headquarters in Akure on Friday.

Mr Ogbodu disclosed that the deep tunnel was prepared to serve as a passage to the bank premises and rob the bank.

He advised bank authorities in the state to be conscious of their premises so as to avoid falling victim to criminals.

The suspects, a motorcycle snatcher and an Internet fraudster, who had been defrauding people with fake identity of eminent citizens of the state, including the Deputy Governor, Lasisi Oluboyo, were among the five persons paraded.

Police Arrest Olu Falae’s Abductors

Olu Falae's Abductors Arrested By PoliceThe Nigeria Police has arrested five of the eight abductors of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae.

The arrest is coming about two weeks after the elder statesman was released in Akure, Ondo State capital in Nigeria’s south-western region.

A confirmed source of the Ondo State Police Command disclosed that the suspects were arrested in Niger, Ekiti and Ondo States by the Special Intelligence Team deployed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase.

The source also hinted that part of the alleged ransom paid by the family has also been recovered.

The former SGF was kidnapped from his farm in Ondo State on Monday (September 21) with his abductors demanding for a cash sum of N100 million, later reduced to N90 million as ransom.

President Muhammadu Buhari consequently directed the IGP and other security agencies to take all necessary action to ensure the safe and speedy rescue of the former SGF.

Younger brother to the elder statesman, Sunday Falae, confirmed to Channels Television that the former presidential candidate was released by his captors on Thursday, September 24.

Rapists, Kidnappers Amongst 48 Suspects Paraded By Ondo Police

PoliceThe Ondo State Police Command has paraded 48 crime Suspects arrested for various offences across the State.

The offences of the suspects range from kidnapping, cultism, drug trafficking, armed robbery, bank fraud, and rape.

Items recovered from the suspects include: over 300 bags of Indian hemp, one vehicle, 2 laptop computers, 32 GSM phones and various arms.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Isaac Eke, said that the Police in the state is prepared to fight crime. He assured residents of the state that other suspected criminals would soon be apprehended.

The Police in the state has also sent a note of warning to criminals in the state to desist or relocate from the state as the State Police Command would make operating in the state unbearable for them to operate within.

One Killed, 15 Injured In Ondo APC Ward Congress

APCThe ward congress of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Ondo State turned bloody yesterday as one Bosun Adegorola was shot dead and 15 others seriously injured during the exercise.

The deceased was shot on the head at Ajipowo area ward 2 in Akure, the state capital when some members of another faction invaded the area and complained about the conduct of the primaries.

According to the Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, Mr Wole Ogodo, no fewer than three persons have been arrested by the police for alleged breakdown of law and order in the state and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID.

A faction of the party had pulled out of the congress, alleging marginalisation.

The faction that pulled out included a member of the Board of Trustees of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples’ Party, ANPP, Captain Demola Ariyo, the party’s state chairman, Yemisi Aladesaye, State Chairman of defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Olalekan Obolo and its governorship candidate in the October 2012 gubernatorial election, Soji Ehinlanwo.
