Elder Statesman, Samuel Ogbemudia Laid To Rest

ogbemudia3The remains of late elder statesman and two-time Governor of Mid-Western State and later Bendel State, Brigadier General Samuel Ogbemudia (rtd), has been laid to rest.

Dr. Ogbemudia was buried at his residence in Ihaya Street, Benin City, following an interdenominational service held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in the Edo State capital.

A combined team of clergymen from the Christian Association of Nigeria, Edo and Delta chapters took charge of proceedings at the venue.

Family, friends, close associates, past and serving Governors of Edo and Delta states, as well as members of National Assembly and their state counterparts also witnessed the ceremony where they paid their last respects to the two-time Governor.

In a sermon titled “the man and his works”, Bishop Oyonude Kure said the late Ogbemudia by his laudable achievements as an administrator lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

Shortly after the sermon there were tributes from former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor of Delta State, Kingsley Otuaro among others.

Dr. Ogbemudia died on Thursday, March 9 at the age of 84 at a private hospital in Lagos.

While serving as Governor of the old Bendel State, Dr. Ogbemudia initiated improvements in the areas of sports, urban development, education, public transportation, housing, commerce and agriculture.

Buhari Attends APC Mega Rally In Benin

BuhariPresident Muhammadu Buhari was in Edo State on Tuesday for the All Progressives Congress Mega Rally to round up its campaign for the Edo State governorship election.

The rally held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

President Buhari described the APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki as a “seasoned technocrat” who has the capacity to continue to grow the state’s developmental stride.

He promised the Edo people that the country would come out of its current economic challenges with their support for the APC-led government both at federal and state level.


Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and several APC state governors accompanied the President to the campaign rally.

The APC chieftains campaigned for continuity of the ruling party.

The party is going all out to ensure that its candidate, Godwin Obaseki is elected governor of Edo state at the elections holding on Saturday, September 10.

President Buhari also paid tributes to the late Benin monarch, Oba Erediuwa, “I have not seen any more forthright traditional ruler,” he said.

The President was expected to visit the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Eheneden Erediauwao, before attending the mega rally.

APC Presents Edo Governorship Candidate, Flags Off Campaign

Godwin Obaseki, Edo, APCThe All Progressives Congress (APC) has presented its flag-bearer, Mr Godwin Obaseki, while officially flagging off its governorship campaign ahead of the race for the Edo State seat of power.

This comes after the now APC flag-bearer; Mr Obaseki beat 11 other candidates during primaries to pick the ticket ahead of the September 10 governorship election in Edo State.

The National Chairman of the APC, ‎Mr John Oyegun, presented Godwin Obaseki to the people of Edo State at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the state capital in south-south Nigeria, where the APC Edo governorship campaign flag-off held.

He asked the people of the state to vote for continuity of the good deeds of the outgoing State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Obaseki promised to prioritise job creation and make the state’s economy less dependent on oil.

Dignitaries present at the event were APC chieftains namely, Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, the governors of Bauchi, Kano and Plateau states among others.

Ali Modu Sheriff Annuls Plateau State PDP Congress

Ali Modu Sheriff, PDP, PlateauThe former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has nullified the party’s congress in Plateau State.

The embattled PDP Chairman made the annulment when aggrieved members of the party visited him to ask for a fresh congress to elect a chairman in Plateau State.

The delegation led by a former member of the House of Representatives from the state, Mr Bitrus Kaze, alleged that the congress which was conducted in April was not credible.

In his response, Senator Sheriff told the gathering that a new committee would be inaugurated to conduct a fresh congress that would elect principal officers for the PDP in Plateau State.

In a related development, he had on Thursday set up another committee to conduct primaries for three PDP governorship candidates in Edo State, who have bought forms from his faction.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had sent the party their guidelines for the primaries, expressing preparedness to meet up with all the requirements set by the INEC for the September election.

Cripple The PDP
In a swift reaction to this, the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee condemned the move by Senator Sheriff, after Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu had emerged winner of the party’s primaries held on Monday.

MakarfiThey accused him of working with the enemies of the PDP to completely cripple the party in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The committee insisted that the Edo primary election and all the processes leading to it thereof, were properly conducted, monitored and observed by the INEC.

The emergence of the two factions of the PDP is a fall out of the party’s Governors Forum meeting where some leaders of the party removed Senator Sheriff and set up a caretaker committee.

However, the embattled Chairman told reporters when he was refused entrance into the PDP National Secretariat that he remained the chairman of the party until 2018.

Edo PDP Governorship Poll: Makarfi Committee Condemns Sheriff Committee

PDP,Ahmed Makarfi, Ali Modu Sheriff, EdoThe Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the move by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to set up a primary election committee for the Edo State governorship election.

The newly constituted committee, chaired by Senator Hope Uzodinma, was inaugurated after the Monday exercise which produced Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the PDP candidate in the coming election.

In a swift reaction, the Makarfi committee said Senator Sheriff was working with the enemies of the PDP to completely cripple the party in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The committee insisted that the Edo primary election and all the processes leading to it thereof, were properly conducted, monitored and observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“No Trace Of Any Court Order”
The Makarfi committee made their stand known on Thursday evening in a statement by its publicity secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, titled “Senator Sheriff & Co: Too Desperate To Destroy The PDP”.

They said Senator Sheriff had connived with some former and serving governors of the APC to deceive unsuspecting members of the PDP, security agencies and the general public to support his ambition to remain as Chairman of the party by claiming he has a court order.

“We have concluded our investigations and discovered that there is no trace of any court order obtained by Senator Sheriff or any of his cohorts either at FCT High Court or the Federal High Court in Abuja or any court in Nigeria,” the statement read.

The Makarfi committee then sent a stern warning to members serving in any committee set up by Senator Sheriff, saying such members would be engaging in anti-party activities and would face disciplinary action.

Osagie Ize-Iyamu Wins Edo State PDP Governorship Primaries

Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Edo State, PDP, Governorship electionThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared Osagie Ize-Iyamu winner of its just concluded Edo State governorship primary election.

Mr Ize-Iyamu won a total of 584 votes to emerge winner, beating his closest rival, Mr Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, who scored 91 votes to take the second place.

Mr Solomon Edebiri scored 38 votes to emerge third.

The primary election to decide the PDP’s contender in September 10 poll was held on Monday at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the Edo State capital in south-south Nigeria.

The PDP Primary Election Committee was chaired by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umehi.

Statutory delegates started the process after which others took their turns.

Governor Umehi had appealed to all the delegates to be orderly, stressing the need to end the process on time.

Meanwhile, Mr Godwin Obaseki on Sunday picked the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), after beating other candidates at the primaries in Benin City, the Edo State’s capital.

Mr Obaseki polled 1,618 votes to defeat the incumbent Deputy Governor, Pius Odubu, who scored 471 votes, and a former Minister of State for Works, Chris Ogiemwonyi, who got 137 votes amongst others.

2,771 Delegates Storm Ogbemudia Stadium For Edo APC Primaries

Edo APCThe All Progressives Congress (APC) is having its primary election in Edo State, with 12 aspirants from 18 local governments jostling for the top job.

A total of 2,771 delegates made it to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, which is venue of the primary.

However, 2,582 delegates had been accredited to vote in the primary election.

So far, the election has been mostly peaceful, except for a little skirmish.

Accreditation for delegates held earlier in the day at three centres of the city.

Voters were accredited in Agbado Primary School, Imaguero College and George Idah Primary School all in Benin City the Edo State capital

Delegates from Edo Central senatorial district were accredited at Agbado Primary School along Akpakpava Street, while delegates from Edo North senatorial district were accredited at Imaguero College.

Preparations have been in top gear for the September 10 governorship election as political parties in the state move to present their candidates for the election.

The Edo State Governor, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed optimism in the ability of the party to gain victory at the polls in September.

Edo APC Delegates Satisfactied With Governorship Primaries

Already, accreditation for delegates who will elect the party’s governorship candidate in the September governorship poll has been ongoing at three centres of the city.

The delegates would be conveyed to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium where they would cast their votes for their preferred candidate for the governorship election.

Only those cleared would proceed to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to cast their ballot.

Voters were accredited in Agbado Primary School, Imaguero College and George Idah Primary School all in Benin City the Edo State capital

Delegates from Edo Central senatorial district were accredited at Agbado Primary School along Akpakpava Street, while delegates from Edo North senatorial district were accredited at Imaguero College.

Some of the delegates told Channels Television that they were satisfied with the exercise so far as there were no incidents to suggest any irregularities.

They also appealed to the aspirants as well as all the delegates to ensure that peace reigns during the primary poll.

Edo Govt. To Build More Schools With Three Billion Naira

Adams Oshiomhole, Edo, SchoolsThe Edo State government is set to spend another three billion Naira in building more primary schools in the 18 local government areas of the state.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole disclosed this to reporters in Benin City, the state’s capital in southern Nigeria.

He was also addressing school children during the Children’s Day celebration, with the theme: “Protect the Rights of the Children in the Face of Violence and Insecurity and End Child Marriage” at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Edo State.

With the proposed decision of the state government, it is expected that learning environments would be in more enhanced condition to aid easy assimilation of the required knowledge by pupils.

Patience Jonathan Urges Women To Vote Goodluck-Sambo Ticket

Patience-Jonathan-in-EdoWife of the President of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan, has called on Nigerian women to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate President Goodluck Jonathan in the forthcoming general elections.

Addressing the PDP supporters in Benin City, the Edo State capital during a rally at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium on Saturday, Mrs Jonathan said doing so would afford the party the chance to consolidate on the good works it had been doing across the nation.

She appealed to women in Edo State not to miss the opportunity of casting their votes for the Goodluck-Sambo combination, stressing that they have what it takes to deliver.

The first lady had earlier called out to women in the south-western part of Nigeria to address women leaders across the south-west and look for ways of building capacity and empowering them.

Mrs Jonathan made the call in a message sent through the National Coordinator of Women for Change Initiative, Hajia Rabi Ibrahim, who was in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The South-west Coordinator of Women for Change Initiative, Mrs Abosede Ogunleye, explained that the initiative has been able to assist women especially those in rural areas to start small businesses and work their way to self-reliance.

She noted that the meeting with Hajia Ibrahim would first address women in Oyo State, adding that it would then move to Ogun State for further consultations on ways of achieving more women participation in politics as well as foster greater harmony among and more target specific capacity building within the south west and the country at large.

Chief of Staff to the Edo state governor, Patrick Obahigbon in his usual highfalutin English-speaking manner gave a hilarious introduction to Governor Adams Oshiomhole during the 5th Anniversary of the governor in office.

Oshiomhole, charged by the ululations, started jogging on the spot in readiness to reel out his administration’s stewardship of the state’s resources in the past five years.

The anniversary, which took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, was full to its capacity.

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr. Tom IKimi and a host of other leaders of the party were also present during the event which took place on November 12th.
