El-Zakzaky, Wife Arrive In Nigeria

Trip To Delhi

El-Zakzaky and his wife left Nigeria on Monday for India following a ruling of the Kaduna State High Court which granted them permission to be treated in the country.

On their arrival at the hospital where treatment was expected to commence, the trip turned controversial.

Rivers Rerun: APC, PDP Hold Final Rallies Ahead Of Election

Rivers Rerun: APC, PDP Hold Mega Rallies Ahead of ElectionBoth the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state have held mega rallies ahead of the legislative rerun elections in the state.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday staged a mega rally at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elikahia in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The rally which attracted about 12 state governors from APC-controlled states also had in attendance the national chairman of the party, Odigie Oyegun and other party officials.

The former Rivers Governor and Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi told the gathering that security is guaranteed for the legislative rerun elections in the state.

Some of the governors also expressed confidence that the APC would coast to victory in the rerun.

The PDP held its own final rally at Phalga, in the Rivers State capital.

The Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike warned that all those planning to rig the rerun elections in the state will be disgraced.

The Governor, who addressed a crowd of PDP supporters at the rally played down the APC mega rally that held earlier in the day.

According to him, those who had negative things to say about his administration and person should go and resolve the problems that besiege their states.

He was apparently responding to criticisms by some APC governors that attended the APC rally.

Rivers Rerun: PDP Warns Against Sabotaging Election

Rivers Rerun: PDP Warns Against Sabotaging ElectionBarely 48 hours to the long awaited conclusion of the rescheduled legislative rerun elections in parts of Rivers State, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says it has uncovered plans to sabotage the election.

The PDP has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the connivance of security agencies, of plans to hijack and swap the original result sheets for fake ones during the Saturday, December 10, 2016 election.

The statement by its Rivers State Chapter Chairman, Felix Obuah and signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jerry Needam alleged that the agreement was sealed in a secret meeting between the State leadership of the APC, security agents and the electoral body at the residence of one of the APC’s chieftains in Port Harcourt.

The statement noted that no decision was reached at their first meeting owing to INEC’s insistence on involvement of security agents to perfect the deal.

The statement further said that certain persons hired and equipped for the assignment will cause crisis in each of the collation centres to enable the security agents come in under the pretext to calm the situation and while the melee lasts, the fake INEC result sheets would be substituted for the genuine ones.

The Rivers State PDP chairman, Obuah has therefore warned against any attempt to scuttle what he described as the “last opportunity to settle the election issues in the state” by taking sides in the election or indulging in acts that will cause crisis in the state.

According to him, all PDP agents have been asked to be peaceful, law-abiding but to insist that the right is done and never to be intimidated by anybody.

“Let me restate that we are ready for this election having campaigned adequately, demonstrated that we have all it takes to give our people quality leadership through Governor Nyesom Wike’s landmark achievements in one and half years which our good people of Rivers State have seen and acknowledged and are willing to reciprocate by filing out in their numbers on Saturday to confirm.

“We will not therefore take it kindly with any act, overtly or covertly aimed to ridicule Saturday’s exercise.

“May I also enjoin the INEC and the security agencies to caution their staff and personnel to allow peace reign in Rivers State by being fair and unbiased in this all important election,” the State PDP boss declared.

Meanwhile, INEC and the various security agencies, as well as political party leaders and their candidate have met in an effort to ensure that Saturday’s re-run polls are hitch-free.

With the poll already generating tension, the Deputy Inspector General Of Police in charge of Operations, Joshak Habila, said no group would be allowed to cause violence during the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Aniedi Ikoiwak, has equally given the assurance that the commission is ready for the polls.

It was not the first time the commission would make the pledge to ensure that the December 10, Rivers Rerun elections, would be free, fair and violence free.

There have been series of allegations by the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike, who has said INEC, as well as security agencies have planned to rig the elections.

Security Beefed Up Ahead Of Easter Celebration In Plateau

Easter security in PlateauA joint operation by security agents in Plateau State has been put in place to monitor situations ahead of the Easter celebration.

A ban has also been placed on all forms of road side and illegal sale of petroleum products during the fuel scarcity period in Nigeria.

The Commander of the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, Major General Tagbo Ude, disclosed this to reporters on Thursday in Jos, Plateau State capital.

He expressed concern over the increase of illegal petroleum dealers across the state, which is a potential danger in the state, particularly as the Easter celebration is at hand.

Addressing troops after a parade, the Commander urged members of the joint security force to be in readiness for the task of maintaining law and order during the festive season.

Other decisions taken towards a hitch free Easter season by the heads of security agencies at the gathering include an increase in patrols and checkpoints at places where the general public might largely gather.

Lagos PDP Raises Alarm, Alleges APC Plans To Rig Election

Lagos PDPThe Lagos State chapter of PDP has raised an alarm that the APC has devised plans to rig the Lagos governorship election and even resort to violence if not declared winner of the election.

According to the Lagos PDP Spokesman, Taofik Gani, the party’s intelligence report revealed that the APC has recruited thugs and some persons to impersonate youth corpers, security agents and INEC staff in order to manipulate the elections in favour of the APC.

“These persons will wear the uniforms of youth corpers, various security agents and be present as INEC electoral officers.

“The APC has concluded plans to deploy these impersonators to identified polling units where the official INEC officers, security agents and youth corpers will be compromised to concede their functions.

“Some official officers for the elections will not even appear at their units to allow the impersonators function as electoral officers,” he said.

The Lagos PDP has called on INEC, security agencies and the NYSC to paste the names of the officers for each polling unit at the said polling units to prevent the planned impersonation.

“As a party, we have trained our agents to be vigilant and any manipulation at polling units or at any stage of the process shall be repelled.”

The party has also announced the declaration of support by 13 political parties and other groups.

“In the last four days, we have received 13 political parties and many groups who have pledged their supports for PDP in the coming elections. Of significance is the declaration of support by the Lovers of Raji Fashola (LORAF),” Mr Gani added.

NASS Spokesman Describes Police Act As “Shameless”

MohammedSpokesman of the House of Representatives, Zakari Mohammed recounting Thursday’s pandemonium at the National Assembly, described the act of the police as “shameless”, noting that the sponsors of the act should be questioned as well as their intention.

Security agents including the Police and the SSS had barred members of the House of Representatives from entering the National Assembly and had also attacked them using tear gas.

However the security apparatus had explained that “the police deployed its personnel to the premises of the National Assembly following an intelligence report of a likely invasion of the House by hoodlums and thugs”.

In reaction, Mr. Mohammed insisted that a notice should have been given to that effect and should have been done properly.

“If you are coming to a man’s house to protect him you should give him notice, because of certain threats, you are here to protect and should be done in an orderly manner” he said.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Mr. Mohammed noted that every member has an I.D card and the police should have stopped members at the entrance to check I.D cards, wondering if thugs would dress properly like lawmakers.

He further questioned why the Senate president, David Mark was allowed to pass without security checks and the Deputy Leader, stating that “the same gate was where the Senate President passed through and his deputy but the Speaker of the House of Reps was prevented from entering through same gate”.

Mr. Mohammed complained of the hooded officers that were at the gate, pushing the Speaker and preventing him from gaining entrance.

“If you’re coming to perform a legitimate duty the essence of the uniform is for your name tag and service number to display, but with this kind of hooded men it can just be anybody and its disturbing especially in a democratic dispensation” he noted.

Mr. Mohammed further noted that ideally the lawmakers are supposed to punish the police for such an act.

He also said that many people joined the police for lack of any other job to do.

“Some people wanted to be bankers… but because of the problem of unemployment, they were forced to find themselves in Police service and so you see all manner of things that are going on.”

“We have armed robbers as law enforcement agents.” Ogunlana said.
