The police in Plateau state have confirmed  the death of eight people in a fresh violence that erupted between the Fulani and Tarok speaking ethnic groups of Wadata community in Wase Local Government Area of the state.

Plateau State Police Commissioner, Chris Olakpe told Channels Television that a reinforcement of security personnel has been redeployed to the area to forestall breakdown of law and order as well as increasing security presence in the area.

Violence flared after the discovery of a corpse of a missing person in Wadata, Wase local government area of Plateau state, North Central Nigeria, local residents said.

Fighting broke out between the Fulani and Tarok speaking ethnic groups after the decomposed corpse was found which according to some sources led to reprisals that claimed 21 lives .

Conflicting Reports

Local resident Nuru Shehu told Reuters that 22 bodies were found after the violence, which began on Tuesday night.

Confirming the incident also to Reuters, Military spokesman Ibrahim Saidu Mustapha said “I am confirming to you that nine people were killed in a clash between the Fulani and the Tarok people,”.

Plateau state in north central Nigeria has been a flash point of religious and ethnic violence which has maimed and killed many.
