MilitaryThe Nigerian military says it is ready to allow movement of people, goods and services along the 130 Km Damaturu-Biu road in Yobe State.

This was disclosed to reporters on Thursday after a tour of some portions of the road by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigeria Army, Brigadier General Mohammed Aliyu.

Brigadier General Aliyu explained that opening up commercial activities along the road was significant to the current military operation in Nigeria’s northeast geopolitical zone, considering the strategic nature of the road and its economic significance.

During the tour, the GOC had a stopover at Katarko village, some 22KM from Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, to inspect a major bridge which was destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents to prevent military access to the areas under their control.

The military had, during its operation in the heat of the insurgency, constructed a floatable and foldable bridge to enable it cross over to carry out its onslaught on the dreaded sect members.

The Army officer wondered why the road was still not open for commercial activities despite the restoration of peace along the road.

He also expressed sadness over the deplorable condition of the road.

He stated that the military highest authority had been informed of the situation and promised to relate same to the Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, for possible solution.

The GOC hinted that more troops have been deployed and they would be used in opening up the road and ensuring the safety of the commuters.

Damaturu-Biu road is one of the strategic entry points to Yobe and Borno states from other parts of the northeast states and the country as a whole. It came under control of the terrorists but was recaptured few months ago by the security forces.

Channels Television reported that some returnees who are presently residing in Katarko town have started dry farming along the river Katarko as a means of livelihood.

Life appeared to be picking up gradually for the returnees who are banking on the security presence in and around Katarko town for a sustained peace in the troubled area.
