Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday barricaded the premises of the Borno State secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Maiduguri and stopped labour members from joining the nationwide protest against rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.

Armed policemen led by the state police commissioner were dispatched to the secretariat on Tuesday morning to stop the protest.

Addressing members of the NLC after several attempts to hold the protest failed, the state chairman, Inuwa Yusuf, said himself alongside other executives of the NLC had in the past three days held meetings with the command for a peaceful protest but the police refused to obliged them, alleging that intelligence reports indicated that hoodlums might high jack the protest.

After protests against the police decision, members of the NLC staged a walk, displaying placards to register their displeasures.
