One of the individuals nominated by Boko Haram to help in its planned negotiation with the federal government, Senator Bukar Ibrahim, has claimed that the fundamentalist sect is not the leading killer of people in the north but security operatives.

He claimed that over 5,000 ordinary people have lost their lives in the hands of security agencies staging a counter insurgency in the north-eastern party of the country.

According to Senator Ibrahim, “Boko Haram are not the number one killers of ordinary people in the north. Not even armed robbers but the security agencies. After the security agencies comes armed robbers, ordinary criminals who now use the name of Boko Haram to extort money from people” the Senator stated affirmatively.

Senator Ibrahim, made this known while contributing to a plenary motion on the recent banditry attacks on Kabaru village in Zamfara state.

The Senator claimed that criminals now send out text messages to people to part with their money, demanding for N10 million to N100,000.

The claim by Senator Ibrahim is coming after Amnesty International accused the Nigerian security forces of widespread abuses in their campaign against the Islamist militant group.

The group in a report listed the abuses to include extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearance and torture.
