Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson has issued 500 million Naira, out of the 1billion Naira promised to women in the state, as part of his women empowerment programme for the year 2013.

The fund which was released to assist women cooperatives in the state will be disbursed to poor families in the state with the women as the beneficiaries. This is done as the women are believed to drive the economy of the family and by extension the state.

The governor who was showered with praises and prayers from those present at the event, appealed to the women to view the loan as a means of permanent economic freedom for them and their families.

The State Commissioner of Women Affairs, Sarafina Otazi, who read the welcome address, advised the women on the need to be accountable in investing the monies and pay back when due to enable other women benefit from the scheme.

The Acting Director-General of the Bayelsa State Micro Finance and Enterprise Development Agency, Mr Ifiemi Ikpaikpai, then explained how the monies will be disbursed in the 32 rural development areas in the state.

After presenting the cheque to the Commissioner of Women Affairs and representatives of the various women groups in the state, Governor Dickson added to the joy of the already jubilant women by promising an addition of 1 million Naira to the women cooperative fund if the women make profitable and judicious use of the money already released.

The presentation ceremony was held at the banquet hall of the Bayelsa State Government House.
