A former governor of Kano state, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau has revealed why he left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to team up with the ruling People’s Democratic Party.
In an interview with Channels Television in Abuja, Mr Shekarau dismissed the APC as an unserious contender to the nation’s political throne, saying the party lacks structures nationwide.
Mr Shekarau, who denied having any leadership tussle with the incumbent governor of the state, Musa Kwankwaso, said the “APC has lost the vision behind its formation as it is now being run by one individual without recourse to the interim leadership of the party nationwide”.
Shekarau was elected Governor of Kano State in April 2003 and re-elected in 2007 under the platform of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP).
He was one of the leading candidates aspiring to become president during the 2011 general elections after he contested on the platform of the same party.
Shekarau co-chaired the committee that harmonised the merger of three defunct parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr. Shekarau, backed by his supporters from the 44 local government areas of Kano, announced his decision to defect to the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday, January 29th.
He made the declaration at his Bompai GRA residence in Kano.
