Buhari transition committeeNigeria’s President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, has inaugurated a transition committee ahead of the May 29 handover date.

The setting up of the committee is coming a week after President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a transition committee led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.

The 19-member committee is expected to develop a clear framework for liaison with the out-going administration for purposes of a smooth handover and takeover and to receive hand-over documents from Ministries, Departments and Agencies with the aim of itemising the most important or most urgent issues confronting the in-coming government.

In a statement on Wednesday by the spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lai Mohammed, the committee is expected to review and make preliminary assessment of the balance sheet of government with particular emphasis on the status of assets and liabilities of government.

‘Quick Fixes’

Also, part of the committee’s terms of reference will be to undertake a preliminary assessment of the security challenges facing the country and the counter-insurgency measures taken by the present government so far.

In the end, the committee will suggest “quick fixes” which will result in tangible, visible and practical measures so that change will be seen after 30 days, 100 days and six months of the administration the May 29 handover.

Meanwhile, the President-elect has cautioned that the committee and his government were not on a witch-hunt mission and would not engage in fault-finding. He says they are seeking facts.

General Buhari, however, said the job was to learn from the mistakes of the past and attempt to avoid similar events.

The Buhari Transition Committee is to be led by Mr Ahmed Joda while Dr. Doyin Salami will act as the vice chairman.

Other members are; the APC Chairman, Mr John Oyegun, the party spokesperson, Mr Mohamamedm and the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.

Other party leaders like Mr Ogbonanya Onu, Senator Audu Ogbeh and a former Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Tam David West are also members of the committee.
