Gunmen have attacked police patrols in the Jordanian city of Karak, killing five people and injuring several others.

Security sources said a female Canadian tourist is among the dead.

Although no group has admitted carrying out the attacks, a manhunt has been launched around an ancient castle in the city.

Jordan is a close ally of the U.S and a member of the U.S-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.

U.S forces have trained a small group of Syrian rebels in Jordan as well as Iraqi and Palestinian security forces.

Security sources also revealed that at least nine people had been wounded in Sunday’s attack in Karak.
