Residents of Angwan Nungu in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital have called on the State government to construct water channels in the area to avert a continuous loss of lives and property.
They made the call when Channels Television visited the area after a heavy downpour which destroyed their homes and drowned their six-year-old son, Shettima Mohammed.
Shettima lost his life after a huge water flow pulled the fence of their house, took over their rooms and flushed him and his mother into a ditch.
Mother of the deceased could not hold back her tears as she gives an account of the incident, “As we ran out we didn’t realise there was a hole, we fell and the water mobed us into the ditch then my son fell from back.
“He was in front and I was following him behind. We kept moving and at a point, I didn’t see him again.
“Later on I sighted a tree which I held until I was saved by a neighbour.”
Meanwhile, a resident of the area suggested an evacuation of inhabitants to avert reoccurrence.
While the government has a duty to provide infrastructure for the people, they also have a part to play by avoiding building houses on water channels.
