The Delta State House of Assembly has suspended the immediate past speaker of the Assembly, Monday Igbuya.

Igbuya was suspended over allegations of financial recklessness during his tenure as speaker.

His suspension followed a motion, under matters of urgent public importance, by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Tim Owhefere.

The motion was seconded by a member representing Ughelli South, Rueben Izeze, and unanimously adopted by the House during plenary on Wednesday.

In addition to the suspension, the Assembly set up a three-member ad hoc committee to review the preliminary report of a committee earlier set up by the Assembly in October 2017 to investigate the matter.

The committee had submitted the report in February this year.

Igbuya’s suspension, according to the motion, is to enable the ad hoc committee to carry out its assignment without interference.

The ad hoc committee is expected to complete its review and report back to the assembly on October 8, 2018.

Igbuya had been impeached as Speaker of the Assembly in May 2017 over alleged abuse of office and highhandedness.

The lawmaker representing Okpe state constituency, Sheriff Oborevwori, was elected and sworn in as the Speaker and holds the position till date.
