With the general elections barely a few days away, the Nigeria Police Force has trained officials and other stakeholders on curbing electoral violence in the country.

The one-day seminar for strategic police heads, military departments, other security agencies and stakeholders involved in election security management was on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba.

Baba said the Force would work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure preparedness to deliver on its mandate of providing full security coverage before, during, and after the 2023 general election.

“As part of the plans to ensure that officers of the NPF are adequately prepared to effectively police the 2023 general election, particularly officers responsible for strategic operational deployments and active field duties across the states of the federation,” the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement.

“The IGP has directed the convergence of all heads of operations in the state and zonal commands at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 9 am, for a one-day training seminar on practical approaches to curbing electoral violence within the election process.”

The seminar with the theme, ‘The role of the Nigeria Police Force in Curbing Election Violence in Nigeria as it Affects the Upcoming 2023 General Election,’ will be attended by several strategic stakeholders, the Force spokesman said.

“The seminar to be declared open by the IGP on Monday will have in attendance Deputy Commissioners of Police in charge of operations at all zonal and state commands of the NPF.

“It will also have participants from the operations department of the military, and other security agencies involved in election security management, members of Civil Society Organisations, the media, youth representatives and the diplomatic community,” he added.

According to Adejobi, Professor Sunday Ochoche of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies would serve as a keynote speaker alongside AIG Wilson Inalegwu (retd.) and CP Lawrence Alobi (retd.) at the seminar organised by the NPF in conjunction with Central Soft Support Services.
