Police authorities in Kano State have warned residents concerning planned protests by supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
There have been protests and prayers in the North-West State since the Appeal Court sacked Governor Abba Yusuf and declared APC’s Nasir Gawuna as the winner of the March 2023 governorship election.
But the latest warning from police authorities is ahead of the planned protests billed for Friday, 24th, and Saturday, 25th November, 2023.
“The Police Command is issuing this warning to all residents of the State to be extra careful as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so only in accordance with the provisions of the law,” the spokesman of the Kano State Police Command Abdullahi Kiyawa said in an early Friday statement.

Assurance of Safety

The Command emphasised that no formal notice of protest had been received from either party.
“The joint security agencies in the State have concluded all necessary arrangements to ensure the well-being and security of the people,” he added. “Those planning to participate in the protest are advised to reconsider, collaborate with law enforcement, and desist from actions that may threaten peace.”
“The position of the law is very clear: whoever attempts to disrupt the peace will be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law,” the police said.
The Police Command also thanked Kano State for their cooperation, reiterating their resolve to protect lives and properties.
It therefore urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through various emergency contact numbers and online platforms provided by the Kano State Police Command.
NNPP Appeals Judgment

Since the court’s verdict, tension has been high in the North-West state. Already, the NNPP has headed to the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict. Governor Yusuf had in the wake of the decision, described it as a “miscarriage of justice” but assured supporters of reclaiming his mandate.
But the APC says the court’s judgment is justice well-served and is confident of winning at the apex court.
