Kano Gov Promises To Rebuild Fire-Ravaged Farm Centre GSM Market

The ambitious redevelopment project includes the reconstruction of the fire-ravaged sections, acquisition of land for market expansion, and the construction of a fully-equipped fire station.

In a sweeping move to revive one of Kano’s most vital commercial hubs, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced a ₦2 billion redevelopment plan for the Farm Centre GSM Market following recent devastating fire outbreaks.

Speaking during a visit to the market on Friday, Governor Yusuf said the investment would not only reconstruct damaged sections but also modernize and expand the market to better serve its thousands of users.

“This intervention is not just a response to the tragic fire incident, but a strategic move to strengthen our economy, create jobs, and make Kano a key player in regional trade,” the governor said, addressing traders and market leaders gathered at the site.

The governor was accompanied by senior government officials and received a rousing welcome from the market community. The announcement was later confirmed in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Fire Recovery, Market Expansion, and Modern Infrastructure

According to Governor Yusuf, the ambitious redevelopment project includes the reconstruction of the fire-ravaged sections, acquisition of land for market expansion, and the construction of a fully-equipped fire station.

To address long-standing infrastructure challenges, the governor also revealed plans for the installation of solar-powered streetlights, the construction of a pedestrian bridge to ease congestion, improved drainage systems to prevent flooding, and the rehabilitation of internal roads.

“We are building not just a market, but a future-proof trading centre,” Yusuf said. “We want this market to be a destination for international trade, connected to our neighbors and open to opportunities beyond our borders.”

Dedicated Management and Security Boost

The state government, he added, will also establish a dedicated management structure for the GSM Market to ensure accountability and smooth operations. He appealed to market users to work closely with law enforcement in curbing rising cases of phone snatching and petty theft.

“We are not only investing in infrastructure but also the safety of the people. Traders and customers must feel secure doing business here,” he said.

Market Leadership Applauds Government Support

In his response, the Chairman of the Farm Centre GSM Market, Jamilu Gama, lauded the government’s intervention as timely and deeply reassuring.

“Our traders are overwhelmed with gratitude. This is a clear message that our struggles are not ignored,” he said. “We suffered great losses in the fire, but today we feel hopeful again.”

He noted that the market, which spans 20 plazas and serves as a key hub for mobile phones and tech services, provides direct employment to over 39,000 youth — making it one of the largest informal technology-based job centers in the region.

Youth Empowerment and Future Plans

Governor Yusuf also reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, highlighting that the state’s 26 vocational training institutes would continue to equip young people with critical skills.

“Skills development remains central to our vision. We will keep investing in our youth to reduce unemployment and drive innovation,” he said.
