Anambra South By-Election: Voters Laud INEC Over Conduct Of Exercise

Saturday’s election came more than one year after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in London, UK, following an illness.

As of 8 am, accreditation and voting have commenced at Polling Unit 001, Amaoji Primary School, Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The polling unit has 1,060 registered voters and is one of the places where the Anambra South Senatorial by-election is being held.

Channels Television observed that the atmosphere around the area is calm, and voters trooped in, gradually, to receive prompt attention from the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The electoral officials had set up election materials before 8 am, making the exercise smooth and seamless. Voters in the polling unit commended the conduct and believe it shows preparedness on the part of INEC.

Meanwhile, the turnout at Polling Unit 002, Ofuiyi Square in the same town, was also impressive.

The polling unit has 753 registered persons. The conduct of voters is commendable as they form a single line for accreditation and voting, which started around 8 am.

It is Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s polling unit, and there’s a moderate security presence with people in brisk business carrying out their activities unhindered.

Some voters also hailed the process, saying that it is a model for any other election.

Saturday’s election came more than one year after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed in July 2024 in London, UK, following an illness. The lawmaker contested and won under the Young Progressives Party (YPP) but later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

There is also a by-election for the Onitsha North 1 Constituency for the Anambra State House of Assembly in the wake of Justice Azuka’s death. He was a member of the Labour Party (LP).

Ahead of the exercise, security agencies have manned the areas affected by the election. Operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army are on the ground in the place.

The elections are coming just a few months before Anambra residents head to the ballot to elect their next governor in November’s governorship election.
