G
unmen suspected to be members of radical sect Boko Haram have attacked a military-run school in Kano state, killing four personnel and injuring two officers.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the Nigerian Air Force Comprehensive School, located in the village of Kwa, along the Kano-Katsina road, where a heavy exchange of gunfire ensued at about 8:30pm.

A local farmer who spoke to the AFP said the gun battle lasted for about half an hour. The farmer had initially dismissed the sound of gun fire as students celebrating the end of the school session, which took effect today.

“Two of our officers have been injured and are receiving treatment in hospital,” a unanimous air force official told the AFP.

Another anonymous source, a doctor, said identified the four killed in the attacks as air force personnel. He said six force personnel had been admitted into the hospital on Thursday night, all with gunshot wounds.

“Three died on admission and another one died later,” he said. “The two others that have been critically injured are being treated.”

According to the report, the school had been under heavy surveillance following a series of attacks in the area, one of which involved the shooting of a police officer.

In a separate incident in the Panshekara area at the Western flank of the ancient city, gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members shot a mobile police officer to death and dispossessed him of his AK47 rifle.

He was rushed to the Aminu Kano hospital for treatment, but later died from extensive injuries.

It was not immediately clear whether Thursday night’s incidents were linked. Airforce officials are expected to give a full press briefing later today with more information on the gun attacks.
