The federal government on Thursday, flagged off the distribution of free textbooks and other instructional materials worth about N6 billion to pupils of public primary and Junior Secondary School.

The textbooks are to be distributed to the students in all the 774 local government areas, across the 36 states of the country, including the FCT.

Represented by Vice-president, Namadi Sambo, President Jonathan at the presentation of the textbooks to some students, said the programme will be backed up with equitable distribution and proper use to achieve the goals of the investment in the education sector.

The Vice-president revealed that, as part of its basic education development plans, the federal government in 2010 and 2011 expended about N16.6 billion on the distribution of books and instructional materials to pupils in primary and junior secondary schools.

Also present at the event, was the Minister of Education, Prof Rukayaat Rufai, who noted that the importance of this gesture cannot be over emphasized considering the challenges of funding in the education sector.

The Vice-president, who performed the presentation of the books to selected pupils from different schools, also emphasised the need to support the programme with proper production, distribution and application.

The textbooks distributed covers English language, Mathematics, Social and basic sciences for Primaries 1 and 2 as well as laboratory equipment for Junior Secondary Schools nationwide.
